Write a strong thesis statement!
The big problem with big words (hint: they make you look stupid) Using big words makes you look stupid. Even if you use them the right way, people will think you aren’t as smart as someone who uses smaller words. And new research from Princeton confirms it. I go over it in writing, this new video. Be Careful Using Big Words – Here’s Why.
Why should you care about robert yates essays number something so trivial? If you’re looking to writing thesis middle school, convert browsers into buyers, you’ve got to yates number 1, build trust and credibility. Thesis Middle School! Now imagine how hard that would be if people think you’re an idiot… As Mark Twain once said, “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter – it’s the on tattoos, difference between the writing thesis statements middle, lightning bug and the lightning.” Well, according to this new research, it would seem that the buddhism compare, RIGHT word is the smaller word. To get the full story, watch the video. I fancy myself a wordsmith. That’s why you’ll never see me use words like utilize, synergy, feckless, or any other pompous word. I’ve always railed against people who use big words for writing middle the sake of using big words. But now, I’ve finally got research that allows me to should, tell these people:
Listen up you big dumb idiot: Using big words HURTS you. And I’ve got research from Princeton that proves it. Speaking of thesis statements middle which, I’m Derek Halpern, the founder of Social Triggers. And in this video, I’ll show you how using big words can make you look stupid. Let’s get all scientific. Princeton researchers ran three experiments: In the first experiment, they wrote admissions essays. Robert Of Brutus! The first was an original essay.
The second, a moderate-complexity essay. And the third, a high-complexity essay. How were these essays rated? The simple essays were given higher ratings than the moderately complex ones, and the moderately complex ones were given higher rating than the highly complex ones. Or in writing thesis statements, other words… Using big words can KILL your chance at attending college. Use big words and you’ll suffer the robert yates essays number, consequences. In the second experiment, they wanted to control for content. So, they found foreign texts.
In one scenario, they created a simple translation. Writing Statements School! In another, they created a complex translation. Once again, the more complicated vocabulary negatively influenced raters’ assessment of the robert yates number 1, text. And this was found regardless of writing thesis statements school prior expectations of the author’s intelligence. Or again, in other words: using big words makes people hate you. Want to Know How to panic disorder research paper, Email Influential People (And Actually Get a Response)? Download this free eBook to get the word-for-word scripts you can use to do exactly that. And finally, in writing thesis, the third, most telling experiment, here’s what happened: Researchers got together some research. Persuasive Essay! And they took the first 144 words of that research.
In one case, they left it intact. In another case, they replaced all words with nine or more letters with its second shortest entry in the Microsoft Word Thesaurus. They then had people rate the excerpt. When people read the less complicated version, the people reading it assumed the writing, author was more intelligent than when reading the more complicated version. The data is robert yates essays of brutus clear. Using big words makes people think you’re stupid. Stop using them. Now, here’s what’s great about this video:
Even though I focused in on how using big words makes people think you’re stupid, it’s also a proven WALLET CLOSER. When you’re in business, you might be tempted to over describe what you do with complex language to make it sound like you’re a badass. Writing Middle! But people don’t buy what they don’t understand. So, using big words makes you look stupid. Argument Of Definition Essay! And it also takes money you rightfully deserve right out of your business. So, don’t use them. Now I have a question for writing thesis middle school you: What big words do you see people use that they should eliminate from their language? What would you replace them with?
When I went to the vet to get my dog neutered (I had to because of buddhism and contrast a condition he had), the vet made a mistake that made me think she was stupid. I did a video about it here. So, leave a comment below this video. I send out middle school, videos just like this each week and you won’t want to miss them. Join OVER 200,000 subscribers. Some words are too big for somebody to even remember after 5 seconds.I would rather desist from speech essay using such words.
I totally disagree with this article. I think it’s your ego underestimating the average person’s intellegence. Thesis Statements Middle! Just because someone doesn’t use large words, it doesn’t mean they can’t understand the meaning of research them when you use them in a sentence. Thesis School! I understand the average person can’t keep up if you were to use 5-10 large words in every sentence but throwing one or two in, most people can figure out speech, what they mean or can recall their meaning, even if they previously forgot about thesis middle school it. If they cant, AND they don’t ask you the meaning, then they’re probably too stupid to make a judgement on your intellegence anyways.
Me, personally, sometimes I feel there’s no other words or group of words that can get my point across or be able to describe something in enough detail to ensure the recipient can get as close an paper, image as what’s in my head without using some bigger, more descriptive or more finely tuned words. Ryan I like what you say and I agree. I agree with you Ryan, sometimes when you have to explain a certain aspect of a situation, it is better to use a more complex word to better articulate the middle school, meaning. Take Greek for example, there are many words that means love(e.g. Buddhism And Contrast! Love meaning brotherly love vs intimate sexual love), but all mean different type of love. Which has drastic effects on the meaning of the sentence. Thesis Statements Middle! Similar to “said, whisper, shout” each has a different connotation and can change the tone/meaning completely. I forgot to add that using big words can significantly reduce the amount of words you use and argumentative essay should thus, the amount of time it takes your readers to writing statements school, get the jist of what you have to essay, say. Middle! ie. “make a judgement” could be simply put as “guage” if i were to proofread my own comment. smart = knowing many things.
smart aleck = knowing many things + *needing* to show people you’re smart. wise = knowing many things + making it easier for people to understand. The point isn’t to avoid using *any* big words. The point is to argument of definition outline, avoid using *unnecessarily* big words, when smaller words still get the *idea* across. “If you can’t explain it simply, then you don’t understand it well enough.” – quote (mis)attributed to Albert Einstein. Honestly what I got from thesis statements middle this was don’t use big words because other people will think something about you. Or in other words; Limit your vocabulary in order to essay should be banned, avoid appearing pretentious in writing school, the eyes of individuals who may be projecting their insecurities onto you.
There’s a difference between assuming and being knowledgeable and if you’re on research paper, the assuming side you’re not trying to spread knowledge, which is a valuable commodity in writing statements school, any circumstance, just make yourself feel better. “Why would they use a word I don’t know? They must be trying to sound smart in front of me.” Vs “I know they used that word wrong, let me correct them.” Yeah, you nailed it better than me. This article was stupid, but the title drew me in to see if the author could come up with any valid points to his argument.
He didn’t. I think the point is using the right word. Not the case, if you read the article and argument this part then you can see the point was not that people who use more “big” words often mis-use them. The Mark Twain quote can make one think that is the point of the author, but ’tis not his intention. AS you can see form the part: “Well, according to school, this new research, it would seem that the RIGHT word is the smaller word.”
So basically the idea is panic paper he is writing thesis statements school saying the argumentative smoking be banned, average person has a small personal vocabulary and when they hear a big word that is unfamiliar to them, then they become confused and unable to statements middle school, follow a person’s statement. A this point, they decide that a person dumb if they don’t understand them. Its a paradoxical thought process, but one I feel is legitimately the norm on our society. Maybe it is the lack of robert yates essays number 1 humility and inability for people to realize they are not as intelligent as the believe. Writing Statements! So once they are confused, they automatically assume it is not because they can’t grasp the information, but because the robert yates of brutus number, information is being given by some one not smart enough to convey the message. Capiche? I constantly see this problem with students. I am currently doing an online degree and writing thesis seriously some people put too much effort in their words, it not only buddhism and hinduism compare and contrast essay makes them look pathetic but when an instruction has been given to write just a certain amount of words I think you should do what it says. I don’t know if they want to impress the teacher or what? Or to show that they have read a lot? My ass!
It might be the age I don’t know, but for statements middle school example I just read what one classmate posted and 1 didn’t even finish reading it cause it was like a 1000 essay, this kind of people I think would be the less suitable to sell something online. They need to writing middle, get a life #128578; The funny thing is that ‘this person’ doesn’t even have a job. I think now I understand why. Lol.
Whenever I hear the word, “stakeholder,” I visualize an speech on tattoos essay, assistant Vampire Killer. Words often distill abstract or complex ideas into just a few syllables. If used appropriately, they can paint an writing thesis middle school, elegant picture with minimal waste. Like any composed work, an argumentative should be banned, essay can be over-engineered, but it can also be beautiful and precise. I think the most important message is the writing thesis statements middle, *responsible* use of sophisticated words rather than their outright avoidance for fear of sounding stupid…….. You’re either ironic or dont get it. Buddhism Compare And Contrast Essay! I believe you to be ironic. You made a comment in a way that made me not like you. I understood all the words you used.
So I like you now because you made me not like you on purpose right? PS. The video incorrectly assumes people think others are stupid for using “big words”. Writing Middle! The logic should be that people like others for disorder paper being able to communicate at an easily digestable rate. The three tests by Stanford showed who was chosen over an other. Writing School! The logic would follow that people choose what they understand and people like those who aren’t pompous. It is not about the writer’s intelligence. Your comment is quite eloquent and well written which I appreciate on essay outline, a more artistic level. But you do a good job at making me not like you.
So kudos to you for placing this gem here. -trolling ’cause it’s 5am and I need attention and I just read something about how people don’t like overly happy people. Then the overly happy people compared themselves to cronically depressed people at the opposite end of the spectrum. Talk about stupid. Anxious shouldn’t be used, I have a friend that said to me I’m Anxious on seeing you, Anxious meaning is depressed, worried, I believe that’s the meaning of anxious, I was up set , if she’s trying to make a point. Just say inLayman terms. I don’t think it means depressed, more anticipating t c you. Writing Thesis Statements School! Could b in a good way. I think that, without realizing it, his advice really only applies to a very particular audience. I don’t think it’s a matter of his advice being wrong, I think it’s a matter of his advice being directed at all people, in general.
I think the truth of the essay, matter is writing statements school that, the research really only robert yates essays number 1 shows that big words that are used unnecessarily create the writing thesis middle, impression of someone being less intelligent. As they did in their study, where they lengthened words just for the sake of essay lengthening words. I believe the real issue is when people who truly do not have a handle or a deep understanding of the statements middle, words they are using, try to use them anyway, and end up in advertently using them at inappropriate times, and in inappropriate ways. i have read a lot of compare essay comments on Derek’s post and clearly those disagreeing with Derek have no idea on how to copy write to sell products – the best book on copy writing is Cashvertising and Derek’s views are 100% aligned with Cashvertising! I would bet good money that those criticism from statements middle school this post never netted 1m plus in profits life Derek has! ameliorate is owl creek essays a douche bag term used by try hard wankers. I have limited “big words” in my vocabulary, mainly because I don’t understand the rest. This video clip may have its points and winning arguments, but purely because there is no one challenging this guy. I usually kick back and laugh while watching these guys show off their “big boy words” with sentences like “I am smart because I read a lot and thesis statements middle school I have a lot of articulate things to say because i am smart” and then make videos about smart dumb people..
This video really discourages people to read and bridge essays educate themselves and practice english amongst colleagues, friends and family without judgement of course. Writing Thesis Middle! If you’re going to use “big words”, use it to use less “small words” rather than replacing a perfectly fine “small word” for a 10 syllable “big word” to feel edumacated… A worse word than ‘utilize’ is LEVERAGE. I have a co-worker who uses this word about 10 times a day in essay smoking be banned, conversation and writing thesis statements middle school email. It annoys everybody! “Let’s leverage that code to robert yates, the new project”, “I’m going to leverage that email in the meeting”, etc. Annoying as hell. Maybe he is annoying cos he uses the word LEVERAGE in a “not-so-appropriate” context but I think the word leverage sounds more calm, gentle and thesis statements less noisy in pronunciation as compared to the word UTILIZE. None of the research mentioned in of brutus number, this video indicates that using big words makes people think you’re ‘stupid’.
It only means people have a distaste for thesis statements sesquipedalian writing. Robert Yates 1! And when the papers were written with the intention of being so, and not with intention of using the right word at the right time, this is to be expected. What the research indicates here is people feel threatened or simply become frustrated when they are confronted with words they may not understand. I would do a similar study, asking the thesis statements middle school, subjects to read over the works of early 20th century and contemporary writers. I would then see which writers they thought sounded more intelligent and with that, I’d expect a totally different conclusion.
There’s a difference between being ostentatiously sesquipedalian and argument essay outline being eloquent. Trust me. Nobody – anywhere, under any circumstances, is threatened by the use of statements middle school a word like ” sesquipedalian”. It makes the writer look desperate to essay, impress and lacking command of statements language. (Not a single other word was more succinct, fit the argument of definition, rhythm of the sentence? And you had to use it TWICE?) Bottom line : If you can’t write clearly, you sound dumb. Doesn’t matter if you really aren’t. Doesn’t matter if you know many polysyllabic words. The reader lent you their ears, and you made a an awkward, self-conscious attempt to impress them rather than communicate. Of course, they do.
They’re college students! You’re assuming that the test subjects were all literate and enjoyed reading. Sometimes the right word, Mr. Twang, IS a big word. So much for your research. And your misleading title, as well. Actually big words written by writers can be well crafted and make sense in writing thesis statements, the right situations! Why do we try and argument of definition outline downplay ones intelligence? If you use the words in the proper context, it doesn’t make you look stupid. Eloquent use of langue should be considered a good thing.
Education and intelligence should never be degraded. Stupidity should. And thus we have generations of dumb ass people. A perfect example of a person trying make herself look smart! Well done stranger. Please stop saying. ‘reach out’ when you really mean “I will get in touch with you”. Please stop saying “stakeholders”. Thesis Middle! No one cares what that means.
And most of and hinduism and contrast all, please please PLEASE stop using the word “literally” so damn much. Well, “big” words used improperly, like any sophisticated thing, is an embarrassment. Middle School! But to owl creek essays, “dumb down” speech for the sake of perception, or acceptance is, at best, disingenuous. Words convey meaning. They are symbolic representations of ideas and definitions, and thesis statements each word that emerges in bridge essays, language has a distinct purpose. Culturally, some things or ideas have one or two words to represent them. Writing Thesis Statements Middle! Other things might need multiple words to express subtle differences in meaning. (For example, in certain Eskimo languages, “snow” has many different words to convey different types and owl creek essays contexts). Having said that, a “speech act” depends on context and contingency of audience. To drop “big” words into writing statements middle, a conversation for the sake of argument of definition essay outline “sounding smart” is statements school akin to a novice wrestler attempting a lateral drop throw. Research! It usually ends poorly, and someone might get hurt. My pet peeve would be, without a doubt, the school, new ” affirmative” or “yes”…(drum roll, please)… ABSOLUTELY!
Why does no one say a simple “yes” or “ok” anymore? Ex. “Would you like your salad dressing on the side?” “Absolutely.” Aargggh! Isn’t that overkill? The masses have glommed onto this one which seems to run counter to the over-simplification discussed here. I also hate “organic” used to describe anything other than food. Artists seem to like this word and all I can think of is how they have incorporated carbon chains into whatever it is they’ve done. Perhaps they mean “earthy.” I’m not sure. I like big words.
I like when smart people use them correctly. Argument Of Definition Outline! It gives me hope for mankind. I especially love hearing ten dollar words roll out in a clipped Londonese accent. It is music to my ears (I’m American.) I automatically tack on about 25 IQ points to the speaker. It’s especially healing after 15 minutes of any mind-numbing reality show. Sorry, I don’t agree. People who have a big vocabulary and use the writing, words correctly will always sound more educated and just plain smarter to me.
Suspected education=better chance of being understood. Can we talk about the yates number 1, most commonly misused word in the WORLD? (I would think, seeing as how it even shows up on advertisements) It is my BIGGEST pet peeve when one uses healthy to writing middle school, describe a food. Buddhism And Contrast! Ex. “Guys, I am eating healthy today- no pizza for thesis school me!” or “This salad is really healthy for you” Healthy is should a state of being. HEALTHFUL would be the writing thesis school, correct word in yates essays number 1, describing the nutritious value of a food being beneficial to writing, oneself.
I hate it hate it hate it. I hate it especially because it is used in robert essays, advertisements and there is seemingly no attempt to correct this misuse. The best way when speaking to someone (in my opinion) is speaking on the same level as them. Same holds true for writing thesis middle social gatherings. You present yourself as being no better than others. Always have confidence. However, I think their are certain times to use big words when talking, but limit it to owl creek essays, a few at writing thesis statements middle school, most…….Off subject: What would you think of a hot Sicilian woman using big words in that language to describe the awesome sex your having, Derek?
I agree entirely, and its a great way to leave your audience feeling patronised. This was a very cromulant video. “Soteriology” replaced with it’s definition, “the doctrine of salvation”. That’s the only one I can think of argument essay outline that stands out. Seemed ridiculous to me for anyone to use it.
It now makes sense from watching your video. Writing Thesis Middle School! #128512;. Mike, your skin shouldn’t crawl. An object may have “utility”. If we “utilize” that object , we are “making good use” of its “utility”. On the other hand if we “use” it , we may be “using” it badly. It’s a subtle difference. Derek – you said my pet peeve “utilize” right at the top of your video and I’m sure many others voted for speech it as well. I can’t think of where it would be better than just saying “used” (even though Ronnie Somerville above says that it’s not even the equivalent of “use”).
Every time I hear the word utilize casually dropped into conversation…my skin instantly crawls. And…. utilize means “make practical and statements middle effective use of” it is not the equivalent of speech on tattoos use. What a lot of bollocks. I think Derek hasn’t read the research. The Princeton author himself uses words which Derek would seem to deem too “difficult”, such as: confounds (as a noun) The SIMPLEST of the English texts used words like:
And I think the comparison of the English texts was flawed. The technique was “every applicable word lengthened”. OF COURSE this is going to lead to a text that reads less intelligibly! The translations are from Descartes 4th Meditation. The elephant in the room here is: Which one of the translations conveyed the meaning that Descartes, writing in Latin, intended? From Tweyman’s (1993) translation.
‘Many other matters respecting the attributes of writing thesis statements middle school God and my own nature or mind remain for consideration; but I shall possibly on buddhism and hinduism and contrast, another occasion resume the investigation of these. Now (after ?rst noting what must be done or avoided in middle, order to arrive at essays, a knowledge of the truth) my principal task is to endeavor to emerge from the state of writing thesis statements school doubt into which I have these last days fallen, and to see whether nothing certain can be known. regarding material things’. From Heffernan’s (1990) translation. ‘There remain to be investigated by me many things concerning the buddhism and hinduism, attributes of God, and many things concerning me myself or the nature of my mind. But I shall perhaps resume these things at writing statements school, another time, and now nothing seems to argument of definition essay outline, be more urgent (after I have noticed against what were to be cautioned and thesis statements middle what were to be done in panic paper, order to reach the truth) than that I might try to emerge from the doubts into which I have gone in the pervious (sic) days. and that I might see whether something certain concerning material things could be had’.
“People don’t buy what they don’t understand.” Oh wow, this post reminds me of idiocracy. Never stop learning big words, people. Learn what they mean, how to use them, and how to identify the audience to thesis statements school, which you’re speaking. using big words just to sound smart is dumb. but don’t dumb yourself down because someone else is too dang lazy or stupid to look up what a vocable means. but yes, be sure you make sense to should, the person you’re selling to! I am of the opinion that synergize should be removed completely from the writing thesis statements middle school, English language. Why can’t we say “Collaborate”, or “Work Together”. At meetings, half the time I have to paper, listen to drivel like, “We need to integrate action-driven synergies in regards to networking solutions .” WTF does that even mean. Statements! HTF did that person get a job.
WTF are they getting paid to talk? I think that using fancy words when simpler words are available is stupid. When you are communicating, your goal is to say what you want to say as clearly and argument of definition essay efficiently as possible, and using complex language when speaking to average people defeats that goal. Doctors and writing thesis statements school scientists use complex language and jargon with each other because it’s more efficient for them, but there’s no reason to speak that way when it’s not completely guaranteed that your audience will understand. I treat long, complex, or infrequently used words like candy, and sprinkle them here and there to make things delicious, but not sickening. Sometimes I use words like “Drivel” instead of “Nonsense”, because they add a good rhythm to persuasive speech essay, a sentence and thesis middle school make it flow better. Other times, I use “Drivel” because when you put enough emphasis on yates of brutus number, the last syllable, it makes people laugh. Working at an online ad agency, we often joke about these words as well.
With that said, I’ve yet to school, come up with an alternative work for argument of definition Synergy! I can’t let it go! Great video but there is a question: Does using big words actually make you look stupid? Has the ability to understand the meaning of writing thesis school large words decreased?
(or are we just lazy?) Moot point because we are in buddhism compare and contrast essay, the here and now but wanted thoughts from writing thesis middle others. I think big words make the writer seem oblivious, not stupid. Argumentative Smoking Should! It makes the sentence dense because your brain needs to unwrap these subtle words. Some people fall in thesis school, love with the words, but it’s the thoughts that matter. From worst to best: 1. Argumentative Essay! Poor thought, simple words – some people don’t have the horsepower. 2. Poor thought, complex words – points for trying, ranges from sad to hilarious. 3. Clear thought, complex words – This is being *lazy* for an intelligent person to write.
Yes it gets the point across but your brain hates it. Additional problems because people you are trying to convince think you are being a fancypants. 4. Clear thought, simple words – This is the master level. Writing Thesis Middle School! The language gets out of the way. Advertising has simple, clear language because it helps my thought get into your brain. I agree with the disgust in buzzwords or whatever people use because they think it’s supposed to sell a product. Authenticity is disorder research key, because being true to yourself and your words helps you connect with your listener. Writing Thesis! This is pretty much a given, and it’s a fantastic skill to be able to persuasive speech on tattoos essay, accomplish this effectively. However, I don’t believe in the value of ‘dumbing down’ your words for the benefit of an audience. Being a pompous twit is thesis middle easily recognizable as a tryhard or eccentric, and be banned is not recommended, but certain “big words” are spoken in day-to-day text that are acceptable in regular conversation now and then.
To dodge using larger words so that your audience doesn’t feel stupid or think you’re stupid, just erodes your individuality. If everybody spoke the same simpler words, we’d no longer use language to associate with the sort of thesis school sophistication related to education or integrity. It would also encourage disdain of lingual flexibility, such as appreciating foreign accents or individual quirks. Argumentative Should! You may disagree with me, but I believe there is some truth in this. Can’t agree with you more, Myufi! The great “dumbing-down” of writing thesis middle school America. Seriously, who were the testers? And big words?
The comments show that people can’t even come up with any that are used. Most are misplaced and misused business terminology like synergy. Yet, it matters not, because the point was rightly made: marketing messages must be clear and concise and persuasive essay informal, using colloquial words and statements middle school even slang in some cases. Overall though, Americans are suffereing from seeming stupid because of an inability to utilize even small words to communicate correctly. “Where are you going to?” Repetitive and you sound stupid. Argumentative Smoking Should Be Banned! “Where is the store at?” Ugh. Statements! Then Americans can’t even use who and whom correctly. For some reason “to whom” is and hinduism compare just too much.
Ridiculous. This move to lowest common denominator is bastardization of the language and is setting Americans behind in the world. Writing Thesis Statements Middle School! Yes, I am an argument outline, American, one that has spent an statements middle school, inordinate amount of essay time in England where they are not afraid of the loquacious. Brits have command of their language and writing thesis middle school are so adept that they use slang and of brutus number 1 polysyllabic words seamlessly in a sentence. I’m on statements middle school, a roll! Too much of speech America is indeed feckless. #128578; “Utilize” instead of writing middle school “use” kinda grates on and hinduism compare essay, my nerves. “Plethora,” when not used tongue-in-cheek, is another one. What makes me really hurt for the speaker is when he uses a big word that sounds close to a big word that would make sense in the context of what he’s saying, but the writing thesis, word he actually uses doesn’t mean what he thinks it means. Sorry if you already covered this in the video. I’m not able to listen to it right now, out of consideration for others in the room. Definitely sharing this.
I don’t know if it’s the big word, or the pretentiousness, or just that it’s cliche, but I cringe every time I see the phrase “we provide turnkey solutions” on any business homepage. The one that drives me up the essay, wall is ‘leverage’! I believe it has a valid meaning in the financial world (correct me if I’m wrong), but people are using it all over the place when the word ‘use’ was, and still is, perfectly fine. “We need to leverage new synergies to boost our sales.” That was an actual sentence that I heard last week. Statements! I heard that sentence and and hinduism and contrast essay I did not throw myself through our sliding glass door. I am very proud of myself for writing statements middle school mustering the strength to not shout, “You mean we need to use teamwork to sell stuff!”
does using the should be banned, word superfragilisticexpialidocious make me look like a jerk? LOL. Ever read Sally Hogshead’s FASCINATE? This video left me with a sense of discombobulation and escalated the qualitative plangency of the cognitive dissonance resulting from my vacillation as to the validity of thesis statements your postulation, that the magnitude of the argument outline, locution will differentiate the injudicious person from statements those gifted of erudition. I am indebted to your perspicacity that has precipitated my oooOOOOHHH Ouch Ahh… that’s better, thanks Derek… glad you got me out of that. Agreed, nothing better than reading simple words with direct meaning straight to the mind and heart of the buyer. What’s 10 times worse than the misuse of big words?
Blog comments SEVERAL paragraphs long! I mean, who wants to read them? One might as well just pick up a book on buddhism compare essay, economy and read that… In a word (or two-ish): drop-dead boring….. What were my teachers doing then? Thankfully I use far less of what they taught. As an architect our earnings are related to writing thesis middle school, how well we can talk and convince the client. Of Definition! More often than not I end up simplifying a word I used because it is just not something that is not commonly used. When I write on thesis statements, my blog though I try to keep it simple. How complicated can you make travel posts! In India it is a common notion that the person who churns out puff-words knows more, maybe because English is owl creek essays not our first language.
While preparing my debate for school events teachers would advise to statements middle school, replace words which i would never use in regular conversation. But the best response I had received was when i delivered in the most simple language possible. Didnot win that one! So what do you think will you be impressed with bigger words in another language you are not really good at and hinduism essay, or which is not your native language? Just before I started my Psychology degree, I asked a friend who was two years ahead of me if she had any advice.
She said: “Always write as if you’re writing for the layman” I’m convinced that taking this advice is the reason I did as well as I did (UK equivalent of magna cum laude), in writing middle school, spite of owl creek bridge essays spending most of my time running the thesis statements, student radio station! Really enjoy the videos Derek! I must say though, the persuasive speech, conclusions drawn from the study and by many of the commenters are rather irksome. If someone is highly and unequivocally intelligent, I highly doubt the use of sophisticated language will make them appear dumb.
Others may feel dumb in their presence, but that is thesis middle school another matter entirely. People like Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Stephen Fry use sophisticated language and they are clearly intelligent people. I remember first reading Joseph Heller’s amazing classic ‘Catch 22’ and having to panic disorder, use a dictionary every third sentence. Writing Thesis Middle! It didn’t detract from the obvious conclusion that the man was a genius. Use language appropriate to your audience. And if you love the on tattoos essay, English language and the beautiful subtlety of meaning that it can convey, then don’t only hang out with people who insist on killing the writing thesis middle school, word ‘loquacious’ by replacing it with ‘chatty’. Robert Essays 1! I mean, come on! Agree with this concept entirely, with such evidence who wouldn’t – But I have to say I’m glad I’m not the only one who wondered if Utilise was really a big word lol. I guess to go into this a little further, did the study of the reports etc… contain contain the statements, word Utilise? Hashtags seem to be all the rage nowadays. They seem to be the paper, simplest nugget you can digest because they are typically single words or phrases, rather than sentences, mashed together.
And it seems like people like (for some reason) and understand them easier! This makes me think I should try to thesis statements middle school, sprinkle some in, except I really don’t like hashtags that are substituted for actual sentences. Is there a balance to reach here? I keep a scrap of paper on the wall next to my desk. It’s a quote by William Penn, “Speak properly, and in as few words as you can, but always plainly; for robert number the end of speech is not ostentation, but to thesis school, be understood.” That was a profound broadcast that enlightened me about eliminating some of the more complex vernacular from my business strategy. Sorry, I couldn’t help myself. Compare Essay! Great video. So instead of writing “Do you like to pursue your own inquiry into questions that intrigue you?” How about: “Do you like to follow your own way to research questions you are curious about?” I hate how the word “endorse” is so missused here in the Middle East. Westerners would know this word as meaning you agree with what is being said and statements school put your “stamp” of disorder research approval on it, but here it is used, instead of the thesis middle, simpler, and in my opinion more accurate description, hand-over.
Why are we “endorsing” patients? What does this mean? What you’re really doing is handing over this patient’s care from you to essays, me. Even our electronic documentation, thank God, doesn’t use this word! Unfortunately a lot of writing statements middle school ESL individuals feel they have to use a long word, no matter whether it’s right or wrong to and hinduism essay, make up for the fact English isn’t their first language, when in reality using short clear words have more impact. It is worth noting that since arriving here nearly 5 years ago I’ve had to remove most words from writing middle school my everyday vocabulary that were three or more syllables because people here just didn’t understand them! One syllable is usually best! This was my favorite video, by persuasive on tattoos essay far.
As a writer, editor, and Zinsser deciple, I am forever weeding out the school, ten-dollar words my clients cram into every other sentence. As you said, while they foolishly believe it’s helping, it’s hurting more than they realize. It not only makes them look pompous, but it also gets in the way of the intended message. Short words help us get to the heart of things; they let us see and hear and buddhism and hinduism and contrast essay feel what’s being written. Writing Statements Middle School! Long Latin words only clutter and confuse. They are vague concepts relied on by the lazy. As Zinsser explains… “The English language is smoking should derived from statements school two main sources.
One is Latin, the florid language of ancient Rome. The other is buddhism and contrast essay Anglo-Saxon, the plain languages of statements middle school England and northern Europe. The words derived from panic research paper Latin are the enemy—they will strangle and suffocate everything you write. The Anglo-Saxon words will set you free. “How do those Latin words do their strangling and suffocating? In general they are long, pompous nouns that end in -ion—like implementation and thesis statements middle maximization and communication (five syllables long!)—or that end in -ent—like development and essay fulfillment. Those nouns express a vague concept or an thesis statements middle school, abstract idea, not a specific action that we can picture—somebody doing something. Here’s a typical sentence: “Prior to the implementation of the argumentative essay be banned, financial enhancement.” That means “Before we fixed our money problems.””
Lincoln, E.B. White, Hemmingway, the authors of the Bible…true masters of writing like these and so many more connect with us through words and sentences that are short, precise, and middle powerful. It’s easy to owl creek bridge, be longwinded; a skilled writer knows how to say more with less. “Utilize” popped into my head before I even finished reading your headline! In my experience, “synergy” is corporate speak for writing middle “we’re going to f*** you over and contrast essay, with even more unpaid hours.” I think I’d have felt better about thesis it if they’d just said it plainly, LOL.
I don’t know if you can call this a big word, but one of my pet peeve made-up words is “reoccur” in persuasive on tattoos, all its forms (reoccurrence, reoccurring, etc.). Writing Thesis! It’s just recur (and recurrent, etc.). Argh! That’s fascinating that research studies proved that! It was my University education 10 years ago that indoctrinated (that’s a big word lol) to use Big Words. It’s taken 10 years to undo that and remind myself – keep it simple. Great Post Derek! #128578; I absolutely love the English language and adore words that have a long flow to them… The real – and sad – truth here is that the academic has to sort of speech ‘ dumb himself down’ and confine himself to a tiny vocabulary when speaking to writing statements middle, his audience… Derek, a big fan of bridge essays your style of writing and content. Write from the writing thesis middle school, heart and keep it simple.
Impress by the quality of words not the owl creek bridge essays, depth of your vocabulary. That’s mostly because the a person these days is statements school not very academic. Argument Essay Outline! There’s nothing wrong with using so-called big words in the right crowd. ‘Utilize’ is not a big word… Perhaps one of the most loquacious videos I’ve ever consumed. Evah. To wit, a colossal and ostentatious vocabulary is not only precocious (and precarious), but at bottom, it betrays a commodious bundle of casuistry peppered with sophistry, blended with a dash of supercilious hokum and hubris. In other words, I agree wit you, yo. Nice job. Writing Middle School! I guess the big word is the of definition essay, right word if you are using it with the right audience.
I use everyday words myself because I want to be understood. Okay, cool study, but I think you might be reaching with your headline. 1. Big words can make you look stupid, but only if you don’t use them properly (i.e. you’re a high school student writing an essay and wanting to impress your teacher, so you use thesaurus.com) 2. Synergy is not a big word. It’s more of an alternative, pop word to describe things that complement each other well. 3. A lot of thesis school salesmen, politicians, and elitist people use big words to appear smarter, more educated, more authoritative. Of Definition Essay Outline! Maybe people simply have a distrust of those people and anyone else who uses bigger-than-necessary words? Just some thoughts I had when watching this video. Could it also be that politicians and elitists vocabulary is larger than your average person, you think?….
Maybe this is writing thesis why the SAT’s finally re-writing and re-structuring its content (not to mention the owl creek bridge essays, fact that more people preferred and took the writing statements middle school, ACT over the SAT last year). Using nouns as verbs (impact, dialog, etc.) aggravate me (make me mad?) Irregardless… Not even a real word but hear it a lot! This actually reminds me of something I’ve learned from disorder research paper a book I’m reading (“Web Copy That Sells” by Maria Veloso). When it comes to online copywriting – writing in such a way to get people to buy or take some other specific action – you want to avoid using big words or trying to impress your audience with your big vocabulary. For instance, instead of writing middle using the word “accolade” use “applause.” Instead of “obstinate” use “stubborn.” Instead of “diminutive” use “small.” Instead of essay “astute” use “smart.” I could go on and on, but the point is writing thesis middle that less is more. Owl Creek Essays! If you’re going to use words that will make your audience turn to statements, a dictionary (or to Google) then you just might lose them.
I was just thinking about this today as I was creating a new Pinterest board… at yates essays number, first, I named it “typography” (which is one such big word used a lot these days…) Instead, I named it “words”. Seems like that might fit this list. Hope it helps. Is it just me or did you find the thesis statements middle, researcher’s own title somewhat ironic? “Consequences of Erudite Vernacular Utilized Irrespective of Necessity”
How bout… “Using GED level words for no good reason” The researcher’s title is intentionally wry :¬) The first half verbose; the second half is the mirror of the first made simpler. I used to work in science and OMG didn’t we all love the disorder, big words and complex phrasing. We used to writing middle, laugh that science research must be written in a deliberately obtuse way to confuse the essay, laity. “inverse positive correlation ” instead of writing statements middle “nah, its not the cause” was a phrase I found particularly funny.
These days I tries to owl creek, speak more normal innit *spoken with a Cornish accent* I wrote contracts for several years and thesis statements middle school taking over for someone who liked to use big words was a nightmare. Since I also had to execute the contracts, I cannot tell you how much time I spent trying to figure out smoking should, what the heck we had even promised through the middle school, contract. I started writing the on tattoos, contracts more clear and concise, avoiding legal jargon that no one understood and replacing it with basic language so everyone could understand it perfectly. A few choice words I could do without hearing are: echelon, vernacular and accoutrements (although I couldn’t tell you what to statements school, replace the and contrast, last one with and the guy faked a fancy face when he said it to emphasize his fanciness when saying it so it was funny). I had a coworker say we were going to thesis statements middle, “embargo” on a fun journey and robert yates of brutus 1 mention how great it was that her husband had “feld (felled?)” the writing thesis middle school, laundry last night. She’s full of fun big words! #128578; Love it! Rudolf Flesch’s book, “The Art of Plain Talk” and “The Art of robert essays number 1 Readable Writing” cover this topic well.
Too many folks get out of college under the theory that “If you can’t dazzle ’em with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit” (quote attributed to W.C. Fields). When you start hitting words you don’t understand … wonder what kind of stuff the speaker/writer is statements middle school trying to buddhism essay, pull on you. This applies particularly to advertisers, politicians, lawyers, engineers, and scientists. One of my websites deals with this issue and provides resources to help you avoid this in your own writing and speaking. (I’m passing this site and your discussion to a bunch of buddies who need to know this!) Thanks for a good lesson! Love this. Writing Statements Middle! Makes me feel better! I appreciate the buddhism compare and contrast essay, 3rd study you referenced the most because it seemed to the one that had the writing thesis, best 1 to 1 correlation with “big words.” There are other factors that can make a paper or translation more “complex” other than the length of words: punctuation, number of words per sentence, average number of syllables per word / sentence, etc. Speech Essay! Do you know if the other two studies focused on these factors as well, or are you assuming that “complex” in these studies referred only to length of words? Love this Sharing! The word I wish people would stop using?
Innovative. Thesis Statements Middle! Just say “new.” As a journalist, I can’t tell you the robert essays of brutus number, number of times people would stick the word “innovative” into a press release when really they just meant it was “new.” And no, the big word did not help them get press coverage. Actually, innovative is not *just* new, it’s groundbreaking… though that may not have been applicable either #128578; It seems the problem is not just using big words or not, but substituting smaller and/or bigger words that don’t mean exactly the same thing. This results in a massive skewing of language which ensures that the meaning of what we say is lost, diluted and probably, in a vast number of instances, mutated beyond recognition. I love succinct, descriptive and honest prose – what ever the number of syllables.
I devoutly hope that that never dries up and vanishes – we would lose the thesis school, finer nuances of language and buddhism essay relating and thesis statements school that would be a sad loss indeed. Oh dear, I fear for essays of brutus number the dumbing down of modern society. Writing Thesis Statements Middle School! Big, precise words do hit the smoking should, spot and can convey the author’s more exact meaning, jmho. Big words often have subtle implications that are so nice to not miss. But of course, there are always those superlative wordsmiths who take a few, simple succinct words and express a WORLD with them. Still, I do love big words when they are used with pinpoint accuracy. And oftentimes, a big word can replace a hundred little words.
Brevity being the key to wit, and so much else of thesis middle course. Perhaps modern society may soon choose to of definition, live on 140 texted characters, no more, shortcutted as possible, only thesis expletives, icons and persuasive speech essay smilies used to express every emotion. In reading The Great Books, one can see how much depth of communication and writing statements school thought we miss in compare and contrast, this modern era. I love the past… the intellect… but then, in selling and promoting, little words, baby-simple does make sense. As modern serfs, we have little time for writing statements school depth-filled conversing. Ah well!
I think most of you are somehow sort of missing the point, except Rhysa of the Forest, whose post I thought was spot on. We are supposed to reach ever higher, not lower..Sure, dumbing down your writing to the lowest common denominator is be banned a great tactic if you’re trying to writing thesis statements middle school, sell something, or advertise something, or even in the broader sense of simply trying to reach and communicate with as many people as possible. But I’m not a salesman. Essay Should! I’m not in thesis statements middle, advertising. I’m not trying to reach a broad audience. I am, however, a philosopher, as I believe everyone should be, to one extent or another. Argumentative Essay Be Banned! and in that context, my only goal is to use language to express myself. Writing Middle School! not on essay smoking be banned, a superficial level..no, I mean really, really express myself.
You can’t really express complex emotions and situations with a 5th grade level of comprehension. Writing Middle! I dare say you can never truly communicate an panic research paper, idea, or especially an emotion, entirely in its original form. I don’t care if someone can’t understand me when I talk, or write. That means they don’t need to be listening, and my message is statements middle quite simply not for them. Robert Essays! I have no interest in dumbing down for them. Imagine if Romeo Juliet were written with this perverted, “lowest denominator” kind of mentality. Certainly, it would probably be far more popular at the time it was written, simply because most people would be able to better understand it, even if it’s a gray shade of its original self. But it would certainly no longer be a masterpiece. In many ways, using complex language is writing middle school a way to bridge, ‘filter out’ less capable people from being able to thesis middle school, grasp your writing.
Lawmakers do this on essay smoking, purpose, and it works swimmingly for them. A parallel example is most rap music today: Absolutely, sickeningly simplified. Because the moguls of these record labels understand quite well that complex lyricists don’t sell nearly as well as hyper-simplified, ghetto, hoodrat-speakers. Does this somehow make the dumbed down language ‘better?’ Certainly not. Couldn’t put it better myself:) “I fear for the dumbing down of modern society.” – Indeed! There is the danger of thesis statements catering to and hinduism compare, the least common denominator, of lowering the writing school, intellectual bar so low, that we’re barely capable of a fraction of the expression that was common in essay smoking, the recent past. One can accused of snobbery or elitism by consistently typing Facebook updates using correct punctuation or knowing the difference between “it’s” and “its.” Certainly there can be a showy, snobbish, off-putting air from someone who uses “big words” to flaunt his (supposed) knowledge, but as you pointed out, there are times when the right word is a “big word.” STOP SAYING UTILIZE PLEASE.
Great video! This isn’t exactly the same, but I really hate when people use stupid business lingo. For example… “Holding Pattern” – As in writing statements middle, “we’re sort of in of definition, a holding pattern right now…”. What someone means when they say this is that something is on hold, or stopped, or paused. Writing Thesis Statements Middle! Basically, that no work is being done, or they’re waiting on something. Persuasive Speech On Tattoos! Of course, they could never put it so simply, using simple human language. Instead, they have to writing statements, make it sound official by saying that they’re “in a holding pattern”, as if they were navigating a packed Boeing 747 across a crowded tarmac. Of Definition! I hate this.
“Leverage” – For example, “You can leverage this report to increase productivity.” What am I, a damn pulley? I can’t leverage anything. Middle! I can read it. I can even use it…but I’m not going to buddhism and contrast, leverage it. I’m not going to writing school, “leverage” your report to pry open a car door or make a tackle. You don’t sound smart, you sound like a jerk. Leverage that. “Ping” – Hey, why don’t you ping him when you get a chance, okay?
No. I’m not a freaking computer. Research! I don’t have an thesis middle school, IP address. You don’t “ping” people…you talk to them. You send them emails or call them, but you don’t ping them. “Cadence” – This is on tattoos one of writing thesis school my favorites. “We like to establish a regular cadence with our clients.” Oh, do you? Do you like to establish “a sequence of notes or chords comprising the close of a musical phrase” with your clients?
What are you, a freaking composer? Because they’re the only people establishing cadences. “Putting Out Fires” – As in, “Sorry I didn’t get back to you, I’ve been putting out on tattoos, fires all day.” or “I’m going to have to cancel today, got some fires to put out.” Oh yeah? Got some fires to put out, huh? You know who should be allowed to say that they’ve got some fires to put out? Firefighters, that’s who. You know who shouldn’t be? Because you know what?
Making sure a deliverable isn’t late is NOT putting out a fire. Getting a PowerPoint presentation ready for your boss is not the same as trying against all odds to defeat nature’s most destructive force, possibly saving lives and risking your own in the process. I bet you’ve never put out a fire in your life. Certainly not in your cubicle. So yeah, stop using that stupid business lingo or people like me will hate you. Brock, your comment made me laugh! Every example you gave involved imagery and metaphor. What is wrong with that? Humans think in metaphor.
Metaphor and imagery adds extra meaning and nuance. And they’re a short cut. Would you prefer someone ‘fighting fires’ to instead describe to you the literal detail of the 16 different urgent, reactive and school difficult tasks they have to complete? I can just picture you yelling at your TV when a sports commentator exclaims “He’s a freight train! He can’t be stopped!” You: “No! He is NOT a train! A train is a machine! He is a human! And he can be stopped. Stop lying about the laws of physics!” Those with conditions such as autism are only able to use language literally.
Otherwise metaphor and imagery are effective ways to communicate. And Contrast Essay! Even in business. Utilize, a big word? Really? While I agree that interactions should be as simple and as natural as possible, the writing thesis statements, data you have referenced in yates essays of brutus 1, the video seems a bit incomplete and statements middle it could be interpreted in persuasive speech essay, various ways. How do we know that people who have read the essays have assumed that the authors are more or less intelligent? Why did they assume this? Where they asked to consider this prior to reading the essays and did that establish a selection bias? Doesn’t that assumption say something about their own intelligence as well?
See where I’m going with this? #128521; I agree with simplicity, honesty and cutting the BS out all the middle school, time, but the supporting argument is a bit, well, simple. #128578; Great video Derek. I’ll share what I also tweeted – The problem goes beyond “big” words. I’ve been in robert essays of brutus 1, software development for 12 years.
Tech people (developers, project managers, etc.) are terrible about piling up buzz words and tech lingo. My best work happens with a non-techy client that gets his point across without making me glaze over. Nothing pisses me off more than using big words or terminology that only those in your field would know. Statements Middle School! That and essay acronyms that are not common knowledge. First thing that pops in my head is, “WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?”, or “yeah I may understand what you are saying but guess what, I HATE YOU”. I always approach things as I’m explaining to someone who knows NOTHING about what I’m talking about. I try to use the thesis statements middle, easiest words possible to get them to know exactly what I want them to know and keep their attention. Love this! You can tell a great writer from someone who thinks they’re a great writer by speech on tattoos this very factor.
Great writers don’t have to show off their vocabulary. The point of writing to writing statements middle, communicate ideas effectively — not to show off your own intelligence (or apparently, lack of). I saw this the other day, the opening few seconds are exactly what you are talking about, but the robert yates essays of brutus number, whole video is writing worth a watch. Just yesterday I saw my ISP post a message about the difference between IMAP and bridge essays POP email service. Thesis Statements! They gave a lengthy response that included port numbers, security information, and owl creek other technical notes. Then they gave a “simple explanation” that was two sentences long and still confusing. All they needed to do was say “IMAP leaves your messages on writing thesis statements middle school, our servers, while POP downloads and deletes it from the server.” I see everyone trying to “sound smarter” by giving detailed answers rather than simplify it so your audience can understand the critical components.
Complicated answers are my pet-peeve! My problem isn’t so much big words, but the misuse of “big” words. One in particular really bugs me. Infamous. If you’re not sure of the correct use of infamous please do yourself a favor and don’t use it. So yes, if you say “the infamous Ghandi” people will think you’re stupid. It’s like when you’re cursing someone out (not like I do it on a regular basis.) If you use trendy swear words or a different language that only buddhism and hinduism and contrast a select few in the group know, it will have a lesser effect than if you told them straight in a way you can all understand. Great video man. I have a problem with word “spirituality”.
I want to write about it, i want to middle school, present myself as a spiritual coach, but I realize what idea may i convey with it, while in fact i want it to outline, be a down to earth , daily, practical, selfish thing. Still didn’t find anything to replace it… Great Video Derek! You’ve shared this at a fantastic time for thesis me. Bridge Essays! I am in writing school, the process of bridge writing my first book and with it comes all that self-doubt. Especially the doubt, around my ability to write with big words. I am so glad to hear that big words are not necessary. Writing Statements School! I remember a WORD.doc calculating that I wrote at a 4th grade level many years ago and that always stuck in my head making me feel inept. (oops is that a BIG WORD? Nah, it is only 5 letters.) As a friend put it to me once, a good teacher is able to make the panic research, complex simple. Thesis Middle! That’s a good approach to persuasive speech on tattoos, take when we’re writing for others.
While simple is writing thesis good, we don’t want to argumentative should, insult our audience’s intelligence either. Simple must go hand in hand with clarity. One of my favorite posts you’ve done recently. Very clever. OMG I love this. Writing Thesis Statements Middle School! As an attorney, I deal with having to robert yates of brutus number 1, listen to writing statements middle school, this every. Of Definition Outline! freakin’. day. With that said, I work SUPER hard to try to writing, take complex words and issues and make them simple for my clients. Robert Essays Of Brutus 1! This is thesis middle school how I learned the law myself.
I HAD to take complex things and make it simple so I could actually understand it! Okay, a few faves: Derek, your fact finding is correct. On Tattoos Essay! I use to write training for statements the top high tech orgs. The industry standard is/was to argumentative should be banned, write content to an eight grade reading level. Short sentences. Short words. Easy to understand. However, beyond constant usage, I would argue that using big words makes a person sound stupid. Sometimes big words fit the occasion, or there is no appropriate substitute. BTW, what the middle school, heck does ‘Freckless’ mean?
Never heard of this one . Research! . . Writing Middle School! I must be out of touch! This is discombobulating to me. is a smoking little app you can place copy into and it will help you accomplish what you advocate, no advise, no talk about…here. I agree. Hemingway is of definition outline a very useful tool. I highly recommend it. I’m one of middle school those “grammar Nazi’s” people make Facebook quizzes about, yet I still hate when people use big words just to use them. The other day, someone emailed me about a piece of and hinduism compare and contrast essay art in writing statements school, an ad (I’m a designer), and used the word “askance” to describe how he wanted it placed. Even I had to look it up. Definition: with an attitude or look of argument of definition suspicion or disapproval. What he meant: angled.
Just say angled. Or at writing thesis middle school, the very least, use the big word correctly. When’s the panic disorder research paper, last time you saw a sign with an attitude? Askance is statements school a great word when used in the right context. Bridge! Unfortunately, the writing thesis, person in question misused it – he almost certainly meant to use the speech on tattoos essay, word ‘askew’. Another favorite is middle school when people say “irregardless,” when they really mean ‘regardless.’
This drives me crazy as well. I’d love to have a link to the source study to review it. Your summary leaves me wondering if it’s not necessarily about using *big* words, but perhaps about using jargon or larger words when a simpler one *has the on tattoos essay, same meaning* and would actually do as well. Great writing tends to be elegant. Elegance exists only with simplicity and clarity. Jargon, or using clunky syntax, takes away from that.
Utilize is a perfect example – “use” is more elegant, because it is shorter, simpler, and in most cases means exactly the same thing. There are many larger words that convey an thesis statements, idea precisely, when a small word, or even a string of them together, simply will not have the same meaning. I would like to see whether the study controlled for these types of variables that have a huge impact on how people perceive language and its user.. or if it was limited simply to the letter-count without considering context and placement. There’s a footnote at the bottom with an APA citation. Oh, sweet, I missed that – checking it out now. Love, love, LOVE that you use real research for your posts. Speech On Tattoos! Thanks! Cool video. I’m in writing middle, the arts and music, and for me, the word is “organic”.
Every time I hear it, I think produce at bridge essays, Whole Foods. “Wow, you do your work without pesticides and harmful chemicals!” Really, what does it mean? If “organic” means real, true, authentic, then use those words instead. Thesis Middle School! Of course, this is all organically speaking. Thanks for explanation i didn’t know what it means in music #128578; I’m astounded that people think using big words makes you look stupid? Maybe it’s more a matter or trying to use big words to make yourself look smart, which gives off a bad vibe. Owl Creek Essays! Regardless, I absolutely agree that the goal is to writing statements, communicate well and write to your audience. What does, and should definitely makes someone look stupid, is using words incorrectly or pronouncing them incorrectly, and I’m not talking regional accents. “Words” like “irregardless” – that’s a double negative people – it’s just “regardless.” Or “fustrate” instead of middle “fRustrate.”. Derek, I enjoy your videos, but this one almost made me cry. Smoking Be Banned! It appears I must alter the way I communicate both in writing thesis school, the written and spoken word – and that just seems false! (Previously I would have written disingenuous but eschewed the idea for simplicity’s sake, haha) I do understand ‘plain and simple’ is considered best these days, but lament the rarity of an elegantly turned phrase, or the use of and contrast essay more obscure words lending richer meaning and texture to our language.
I take your point, however, and will tuck your advice away for writing middle school future reference – though I can’t help feeling that the general fervour for argument of definition outline basic uniformity has more to do with an inverse snobbery born of writing thesis statements a fear that those who wield the pen more deftly than the average might not only be intellectually superior but an elitist bunch of horrors, to argumentative essay should, boot! I blame the Bond films and writing the Marquis de Sade, personally #128521; I suppose it depends where we write , for essay whom, with what purpose. Daily blogs like this intended for daily use, get the info, take it , use it – simple is better. But when i buy a beautiful book, describing in a poetic way the nature of the sky, i want to feel enchanted and it won’t happen if it’s all written in plain language :). Sorry i put commas in middle, wrong places.
Precisely, Joanna – it’s all in argument of definition essay, the context! I write and revise business plans, so I’ve seen my share of awful vocabulary. “Leverage”, “Architect a Solution” and “Take it to the Next Level” are some of my most loathed words and phrases. It’s funny though, sometimes clients critique the language in my business plans, calling it too simplistic! They want to see more business jargon, because they think that’s what a business plan is supposed to contain. I actually have to educate them about the value of writing statements clarity and conciseness when a lender or investor is argumentative essay smoking should be banned reviewing their plan. While I agree that inside jargon can confuse those who are not in writing middle, the same industry, I find using big words in the proper context and speech on tattoos essay situation makes one sound educated. Statements Middle School! By stating that big words make you sound stupid, you are assuring people that it is ok to sound like Honey Boo-Boo and the hundreds of other people on owl creek essays, tv nowadays that are truly dumbing down today’s society. i completely agree! i love when people even sound like they are using the word of the day on their “word of the thesis statements, day” calendar. Essays Of Brutus Number 1! lol. For me, if it comes across as genuine speech then I’m fine with big words.
You typically know who tends to speak/write consistently on that level as opposed to people that use language awkwardly. Always consider the source! #128578; very true…def agree . Great Video! As an thesis school, author and children’s reading specialist, I know clarity in panic disorder research, context is very important for the reader, especially when writing for children. This is preposterous, Kidding!! Not only do big words make you look stupid, it potentially makes others you are speaking to statements middle, feel less sophisicated thus shutting down the conversation in their head and not remebering a single thing you just said. I find a lot of people *try * to essay smoking, use big words when they are being condescending. Maybe that’s another reason why people don’t like them? So synergistic management solutions is writing not good? #128521; You’re so right, as usual Derek. I learned this in Cashvertising too. Simple is always better.
Great video! Tremendously informative weblog communication Derek. By means of engaging with these confabulations, I must attest that watching your video presentation confirmed my long-held suspicion that utilising protracted vocabulary can facilitate one appearing to resemble a ‘complete ass’ to the very peer group one wishes to become agglutinated. One can only respond to your impressive investigation and subsequent meritorious publication, by disorder research paper expressing an almost unfettered level of appreciativeness. My warmest salutations, It is interesting to consider this, in my Tests and writing thesis statements middle school Measures class (is it less pompous to say that vs. Psychometrics?) I was taught that the average american at least, has a 5th grade reading level. I learned that business writing should be at no higher than a 10th grade level. Nothwithstanding is the disorder research paper, best dumb big word. Writing Thesis Statements Middle! Great vid Derek, I shared this with my team. Just subscribed to your newsletter.
It’s always good finding guys like you (few and far between) that tell it like it is. There’s proper loads of rubbish out there, so when I do find someone cool it makes the endless clicking and searching worth it. Have you heard of Drayton Bird? He tells it like it is without the essay, BS and also extols the virtues of simplistic verbalisation. #128521; Check him out at askdrayton.com he’s been in the game years and says although technology changes, human nature never does. So if you get the basics right everything else should follow. Anyways, good stuff and I’m looking forward to watching and reading through everything. Thanks.
Let’s look at writing, some synonyms for “use” as a verb and “use” as a noun. Verb: “Utilize” does have a special use… but most of the time it’s misused, which makes the person look even more stupid to people who DO know what it means. Noun: “Usage” is a big pet peeve of mine. There is argument of definition essay almost never a reason to thesis, use the research paper, word “usage” instead of just “use”. The purpose of selecting your vocabulary should be to writing statements, make the buddhism and hinduism compare, message clearer and statements middle more effective, not loftier and more confusing. Stop using obscure words for the sake of using obscure words. I’ve been bug-beared by this for ages. Thanks for sourcing the studies. I didn’t come away with quite the smoking should be banned, same conclusions you did.
Best summed up in writing thesis statements middle, the paper’s concluding discussion… “Instead, the effect seems to be constrained by the manner in which ?uency is processed; when there is buddhism and hinduism compare and contrast no obvious source of ?uency (Experiment 4) then intelligence judgements are lowered, but in the presence of an obvious source of ?uency (Experiment 5) intelligence judgements. My reading of it is it comes down to mastery which has a profound effect on fluency. e.g. Writing Thesis! also from Princeton Paper… “Indeed, there is some evidence that complex vocabulary can be indicative of a more intelligent author.” Living in argumentative essay smoking, London, I think perception and reception have as much has to do with people appearing false or putting on airs.
Namely, if the right word comes to writing school, you as easily as breathing, i.e. no need to smoking should be banned, reach for the thesaurus, and writing middle it neatly concisely expresses the idea, folks here at least admire the facility with the language. Which brings up the second point. Who is the audience. In the studies they were Stanford University undergraduates. While fascinating, this is argumentative smoking should a very rare sample indeed vs. a cross-section of the public, including U.S. and international. We all must remain vigilant of reconfirmation bias my friend :¬) Thank you for sharing. Wonderful food for thought. The data may be — as you say — in, but data can never be better than the design of the writing statements middle, study in which the data were collected. Buddhism And Hinduism Compare And Contrast! Would you share the writing middle school, citations so we can evaluate the research ourselves?
At the research paper, bottom of every blog post, there is a footnote section. I cite the study in APA format. Got to laugh at the title of that research! #128578; The two words that I am guilty of using and writing thesis middle will now replace: efficient and effective. Productive, profitable, capable, competent are probably better less ambiguous choices. Open to other suggestions! I agree with you that using plain language is best for Internet audiences. I also think that using BIG words to seem smart is phony. Argument Of Definition Essay Outline! But P L E A S E don’t eliminate them altogether. They’re part of us.
We construct our thoughts out of these building blocks. Love your insight. You’re a welcome blast of ozone! Makes sense. Brings me back to the old K.I.S.S principle. “Keep It Simple Stupid!” Ha. I actually call this “People’s Court Speech”!
Ever watch “The People’s Court” or “Judge Judy”? (I watch it for the entertainment of watching stupidity in action.) But, I noticed that, even people with almost no education or sense, use “alternate words”. Instead of saying, “He got out of his car and started fighting!”, they say something like, “The Defendant then exited his vehicle and began an thesis statements middle school, altercation!” I mean, who talks like that?! For some reason, I think that people think they need to “dumb UP” their words to sound… SMARTER….
Redonculous, I exclaim! Thanks for confirming one of my basic gut instincts – I’ve always thought that using too many words to explain something meant that you don’t really know what you’re talking about. Mark Twain preceded all this research by persuasive a few years: “I never write ‘metropolis’ for seven cents when I can write ‘city’ and get paid the same.” PS.
The title of the research article is epic. In spanish: “Sinergia” “eficaz y eficiente” (together) “cartera de clientes” “Mision y vision” “externalidades” “se cayo el sistema” Fantastic. Short and sweet video. The best part is this delivers ammo to those of us who regularly argue with others about using unnecessary complicated language. Or even worse, using unnecessary complicated language while waffling on. It takes more effort to statements, write clearly and concisely, in plain English.
As Blain Pascal said, “Please forgive the long letter; I didn’t have time to write a short one.” Hi Derek, nice post. I help people get their best body ever and a lot of argument outline that time is spent in a gym. Hearing other coaches explaining such things to their clients like why their butt muscles aren’t switching on writing thesis, properly with cringe worthy phrases like this one; ‘You’re missing mobility in the saggittal plane, which is coming from a lack of owl creek bridge adduction at the articulation of the femur and pelvis.’ I prefer it when coaches speak to me like that, because I understand anatomy and physiology, and it tells me that they do as well. Statements! I’m probably unusual in that though, so as ever, it depends on your audience. I’ve witnessed 2 people saying/writing on argument essay, social media “loquacious”.
I know what the word means, but it’s still obnoxious! Especially given one of the conversations: “my daughter has been exceptionally loquacious this week. Thesis Middle! Is it in the air?” Really dude? She’s 5. Just say she’s been blabbering all week! Or extra chatty! im surprised people can even spell that word on social media. They can’t even spell “you” right. They use “u” Haha THANK YOU for making this video.
Interestingly enough, when I went to NYU, we all delighted in getting to use our big vocabularies with each other, because it was literally the only place it was really acceptable. Since then, I have definitely stopped using such big words in regular life, cause yeah, it can make you sound pompous. The words that get me aren’t necessarily big words, but you got one…synergy. It’s the stupid corporate buzzwords/phrases that really really get to me. I hear them so much when dealing with PR agencies, and bridge essays I can tell exactly what it must be like to work there when I hear them being used in thesis statements middle, emails, etc. Ha.
Those words must die. Circle back around. So many others, I don’t even want to think about robert 1 it anymore. Writing Thesis Statements Middle School! Lol. Question though, Derek. Can you share any insight on where you get your great studies that you reference? Are there good email lists that we could get on if we’re interested in the same types of research? Thanks again.
Synergy is a very fine word. Essays Of Brutus Number 1! However it has no real meaning outside of biology or systematics. It really just comes from reading. Writing! I read a lot. I can’t get enough of reading. For me, it’s the best way to learn along with life experiences. Argument! Thanks Derek for taking a break from statements school speaking engagements to spend more time with us:) Right, this must be why people hate me hahaha. Im (notorious) for using big words. I will attempt to layman speak in the future.
‘Utilize’ isn’t really a big word, is panic it? I spent the entire video pondering that question…and I’m guessing that wasn’t your intent. Personally, I’m all for writing an honest use of language. If I meet someone in be banned, person and writing thesis middle they speak like an ‘Average Joe/Jane’ I’ll be put off if their website / blog / sales sheets sound like the Constitution. If, however, they use large words in research paper, regular conversation (correctly!), but use a dumbed-down version to sell I’d be equally put off. Authenticity is thesis school more important to me as a consumer and a business owner. I’d rather see / hear / read folks using their own language over one that research says will increase conversions.
Especially since I have used a few 9+ letter words here – none of which I consider ‘big,’ and speech on tattoos as Mr. Writing Thesis Statements! T says ‘I pity the fool’ who does. Language is and hinduism compare essay a beautiful and complex thing…let’s not ruin it. I totally agree with you! I’m a big fan of using the thesis middle school, right word when necessary. That’s why I own a traditional desktop thesaurus. The specific thesaurus I bought is the Oxford American “Writer’s Thesaurus.” Why did I pick this one? Because it featured a quote from bridge essays David Foster Wallace on the rear cover. Here’s a picture of that quote: And that quote sums up everything I would say about the word utilize #128521; I love how you utilized a photograph to help us visualize your meaning.
My question to statements middle, Derek is this: could it be that the disorder research, reason people “hate you” when you use big words is statements middle because it makes *them feel* stupid (rather than your conclusion that it makes the person using them look stupid – assuming that they’ve used the panic disorder, “big word” perfectly)? I’m not arguing with the fact that it’s stupid to writing statements, use big words simply to impress or even intimidate your audience, but some of the conclusions you drew from that research seemed… oversimplified. And I agree, Darice and panic disorder research paper Mike — to thesis middle, *always* use a shorter word simply because it’s shorter (rather than being precise, yet concise with language *and* being aware of your audience) would be a shame for the evolution of language… but that’s where we’re headed, it seems. I agree with you completely! It is argumentative smoking a waste of beautiful language to statements, “dumb down” our speech because it may cause others feelings of essay should insecurity.
I geniunely appreciate beautiful, uncommon words and use them to writing thesis statements middle, express myself. Learning (and using!) new words is one of my favorite things in life. I do not wish to make anyone feel bad or inferior. I just love words. I witness people using small words incorrectly as often as “big” words.
So by this logic, these people shouldn’t be allowed to speak at all. Using unfamiliar words could even be a conversation starter and spread an appreciation of language. That’s a beautiful concept. I have to essays, agree with Darice here, in statements middle, that authenticity is what I think sells more than anything else (although I agree about buddhism and hinduism utilize, Derek, in most cases). A lot of it depends on what it is that you are selling, or what your passion is.
In my case, as a psychotherapist, interfaith minister, and yoga teacher, I happen to use certain words a lot, just because they really speak to me. Like the word cultivate. I use a lot of metaphorical words, like the body is the vehicle for the spirit. Car just wouldn’t work (now that really would sound stupid!). So I think it has to do with who your audience is, what you are offering, and writing middle school being authentic to who you are. Connie – you had me at cultivate! #128521; You’re right, audience is buddhism and contrast such an important factor in this discussion.
So glad you mention ‘vehicle’…one of my favorite uses (!) for that word. I agree that in most cases the word “use” is sufficient. To be fair, “utilize” does have a specific meaning different from “use”. I use a wire coat hanger to writing thesis, hang my shirt but if the aerial on speech, my car breaks I can “utilize” a wire coat hanger as a temporary replacement. The use here indicates that I am making use of something not originally intended for writing thesis school the job. Persuasive Speech On Tattoos Essay! But, yes, I could just “use” a coat hanger. :)) I think that’s why it bothers me: it’s “sufficient…” Is that all we’re after?
I’m not a fan of overly descriptive writing, but a well placed word can make all the difference. Writing Thesis School! To say that utilize is always a puff-word is, well, stupid. Thankfully “stupid” is on tattoos essay subjective. #128521; Ha! Interesting take. I don’t agree, but I appreciate the message. #128578; Language is amazing! This is writing thesis really interesting research. I think it really boils down to being real and not making people work to understand you. And of course if you are listening more than you are talking you will use fewer big words by panic research paper default.
And be able to mimic the preferred language the person you are speaking with. #128578; Rivka’s comments say it best! Word choice is all about communicating. People don’t care so much what you know (trying to writing statements middle school, impress with $5 words), they want to know that you care. Actually, there’s a short word I hate that is panic disorder research paper used in middle school, marketing where the big word is actually more understandable. Marketers call presentations “decks”.
Whenever clients hear deck, they expect a bunch of cards or a box of something. But I digress. Here’s the argument outline, big words I hate: penultimate (mainly because it’s misused) Seriously? These are not big words…. The “decks” thing is another example of the same thing.
Jargon is the flipside to “big words”. I would never use “deck” because I know the vast majority do not know it’s usage. Writing Middle School! Classic Sales Professional problem is using jargon when selling. It’s why people selling SEO services have so many problems. Their prospects don’t want SEO. Many of them don’t even know what SEO means. So you have to sell them using terms they understand…. more clients, more leads, help you get found online, etc etc. I don’t only hate the word “pedagogy.” I also hate what it represents. Why? ‘Pedagogy’ just means teaching…. No it doesn’t mean teaching.
Pedagogy is the and hinduism compare essay, method and thesis middle school practice of essays teaching, i.e. teaching as an academic field. Writing Statements Middle School! It is to teaching what medical science is to medicine. People who use it as a synonym for owl creek bridge teaching have fallen into writing thesis middle, the trap of using a big word when a small one will do, and ending up misusing it. This is so funny! I took an owl creek bridge essays, English Vocabulary test the other day, and I thought it would just be about language usage. Most of it was about synonyms, and statements school most of the words were “big” words I’ve never heard anyone use. That’s kind of compare and contrast essay out of touch. If I was talking to someone and slipped in school, a few of of definition outline those words, they’d probably look at me like I was stupid. #128578; That’s the point. Also, when you are talking to somebody you really want them to understand you and not look at you all confused. But hey!
Disclaimer: I do use big words, BUT only when im also about to explain its meaning or its concept. Btw check this out: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis .. haha.. the longest word in statements, the Oxford Dictionary (Supposed to be a lung ailment) Doctors say it all the time when they simply mean ‘see.’ As in, “I was able to visualize the tumor.” Most of the time, it makes them sound like an idiot because to visualize something means to see it in your mind’s eye, not with your actual eyes. Speech On Tattoos! You ‘see’ things with your real eyes. Ha! Outstanding, phenomenal presentation on the dys-utility of excessive loquacity, Master Halpern! I had to learn that word in 10th grade for English.
Yes, it means Black Lung (a miner’s disease). I remember learning it in 7th grade for my GK test. #128578; Did you ever used to watch “In Living Color”? Your post made me think of writing statements school this: http://www.hulu.com/watch/7321#i0,p6,d1. There are so many words and on tattoos essay phrases I dislike (when used outside specialist writing). Parameter.
Quantum. Paradigm. Plethora. Decimate, oh, the list goes on… Writing in a clear, simple way is much more difficult than churning out overblown, complex content and. I have always looked to writing thesis statements middle school, the great George Orwell for disorder paper my inspiration. Thesis Statements School! https://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/orwell46.htm. Probably even more relevant now than it was in 1946. Thanks for robert yates of brutus number sharing this Mike… worthy… apropos (heh)… enjoyed. For all prone to writing thesis statements middle school, TL;DR… …one pearl amongst many from Mike’s Orwellian post:
“A scrupulous writer, in every sentence that he writes, will ask himself at buddhism essay, least four questions, thus: 1. What am I trying to say? 2. What words will express it? 3. What image or idiom will make it clearer? 4. Is this image fresh enough to writing statements, have an effect? And he will probably ask himself two more: 1. Could I put it more shortly? 2. Have I said anything that is avoidably ugly? But you are not obliged to and hinduism essay, go to all this trouble.
You can shirk it by simply throwing your mind open and letting the ready-made phrases come crowding in. They will construct your sentences for you — even think your thoughts for you, to a certain extent — and at need they will perform the statements middle, important service of smoking should partially concealing your meaning even from yourself. It is at this point that the middle, special connection between politics and the debasement of language becomes clear.” Thanks again to Derek for and hinduism and contrast hosting the conversation and Mike for such a wonderful share. Yes, that is writing school true, but in something like computer programming some long words are the robert of brutus, only way to refer to certain triggers as another words wouldn’t have the same effect on the system. Concatenate being one of writing middle them, though I did see a clear shortening of paper that word used on twitter concat’ing. Thanks again, great videos and love the scientific theory you always use behind them. I think there’s a difference between jargon and statements just using bigger $5 words.
Concatenate means a very specific thing, and is also a command, and using shorter words in its place is actually detrimental because those shorter words also mean specific things. There is something to yates essays of brutus 1, be said for using words you know and you’re comfortable with. It’s much more authentic than “dumbing” something down for the sake of selling someone. Jargon is awful. Statements School! Nuanced and buddhism and hinduism compare and contrast essay precise words are gold. the other day I was doing an interview for a local newstation, when people asked what it was about thesis middle I could have simply said ‘oh, I repurpose stuff and argumentative essay be banned they want to come out and writing talk to me about robert number 1 it’ but instead (and I did it specifically because I knew my friends would find the humor in it) I said it was a story on decreasing waste production in our landfills or something similar to that, in short, I keep trash out of the writing middle, landfills by re-purposing items that others might be throwing away and making them useful again (ok, so that isn’t all that short) You’re right. Sometimes the big word is the argumentative essay smoking should be banned, only option. At which point, you should use that word because you need the right word.

ANCIENT CHINESE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. ANCIENT CHINESE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. Ancient China is one of the most remarkable civilizational phenomena ever known. It gave birth to a number of writing thesis inventions and and hinduism and contrast discoveries, which are still used in our times, including compass, porcelain, silk, gunpowder and many others. This paper is to examine the most prominent issues of ancient Chinese science and technology. Writing Thesis! It will focus on agriculture, engineering, mathematics, astronomy and medicine. Ancient Chinese economy was based on buddhism and hinduism compare essay agricultural production.
It was a river civilization so the Chinese began to build dikes to writing middle school, control the annual flooding. Later this allowed to begin rice farming. Their fertilizing allowed them to use the fields year after year, without the need to allow it to lay fallow. In the sixth century BC the Chinese began growing crops in rows, which has not been practiced in western world until the eighteenth century. One of the evidence was the Master Lu#8217;s Spring and Autumn Annals.
It tells us: “If the crops are grown in rows they will mature rapidly because they will not interfere with each other#8217;s growth. The horizontal rows must be well drawn, the vertical rows made with skill, for bridge essays, if the lines are straight the wind will pass gently through”. By the fourth century BC the Chinese government authorities started to promote a frame-plow. It was the first to have adjustable strut which regulated the plowing depth by altering the distance between the blade and the beam. Also the Chinese approached towards winnowing grain to separate out husks and stalks from the grain after harvest and threshing. The grain has been thrown up into the air, preferably in a strong wind, so that the chaff is blown away while the grain falls down to the ground. Later, winnowing baskets were invented allowing to separate the heavy grain from the chaff, which is gradually tipped over the edge of the basket, leaving the grain behind. Writing School! Later still, the persuasive speech essay, winnowing sieve was introduced.
By the second century BC, Chinese invented rotary winnowing fan. Middle School! When plow farming technologies were brought into Holland and England in the seventeenth century from China, they sparked the European agricultural revolution, and it is believed that European agricultural revolution brought up the on tattoos essay, Industrial Revolution. So, the Chinese technology paid a great contribution into rise of the West. Outstanding Chinese engineering achievements are being applied in thesis the whole world. Though Chinese were not the first to disorder, make steel in the 2 century BC, they did invent two exclusive steel production processes: taking the carbon out of cast iron, and melting wrought and cast iron together to make something in between which was steel. New types of steel were used the steel mostly in statements the weapon making such as new swords, new crossbows, and some in the agriculture tools parts. One of the inventions of greatest utility which has spread from essay be banned China throughout the world, so that its origins are no longer realized, is the square-pallet chain pump consisting of an statements middle, endless circulating chain bearing square pallets which hold water, earth, or sand. According to some historical articles, it has been applied since first century BC. Yates Of Brutus! Such chain pumps were effectively used in agriculture, and construction, as well as mining industry, where another outstanding technology has been developed a drilling method to drill boreholes up to 4800 feet deep. The size of writing thesis statements middle Chinese drilling equipment was remarkable with derrick up to 180 feet above ground, tubes for extracting 130 feet long.
The main problem was usually to break through hard rocks, and Chinese boreholes made it possible to robert yates essays, drill up to dozens feet into depth of firm ground. A drill would be suspended by bamboo cables from a derrick. Invention of cast iron provided mighty drilling bits. The later development of belt-drive in the 1 century BC allowed to writing statements middle school, transmit power from one wheel to speech essay, another, and writing thesis middle school produce continuous rotary motion. Also, driving-belt was essential for the invention of the panic, spinning-wheel. The belts could now run not only round normal wheels with rims, but also round rimless wheels.
The driving-belt was apparently imported to Europe as part of the technology of quilling-wheels and spinning-wheels introduced into Italy by travelers returning from China. Flat belts and wire cables as driving-belts in Europe only began to be used in the nineteenth century. Mathematics and physics. Chinese mathematics was defined by Chinese in ancient times as the #8220;art of calculation#8221; (suan chu), and it was both scientific and spiritual practice. The first true evidence of mathematical activity in China can be found in numeration symbols on tortoise shells and flat cattle bones (commonly called oracle bones), dated from the Shang dynasty (14th century B.C.). In fact, the numeration system applied in the modern world originated 34 centuries ago in China. The need for mathematical calculations appeared for development of the calendar, flood-control measures, administration, and thesis so on. To facilitate the calculations they invented a wide variety of mechanical aids like counting boards, and wrote numerous mathematics texts to aid them in mathematical calculation. They also discovered a concept of zero. Together with the Greeks the Chinese came to idea of irrational number pi.
It expresses the ratio of the yates essays of brutus number 1, circumference of a circle to writing statements, its diameter, a relationship which cannot be framed in terms of whole numbers. The value of pi was computed by Archimedes to three decimal places, and by Ptolemy to four decimal places. Buddhism And Hinduism Compare And Contrast! But after that, no greater accuracy was achieved in the Western world for 1450 years. Middle School! The Chinese, however, made great strides forward in computing pi. In Greece Archimedes decided that pi had a value between 3.142 and 3.140. Liu Hui of essays China was thus able to calculate a value of pi of 3.14159.
At this point, the Chinese overtook the Greeks. Algebra and geometry developed independently. Today it would be hard to imagine such a situation, however, once those sciences were not connected, and the first people to use them together, expressing geometrical shapes by equations, were the Chinese. A Chinese book of the third century AD called the Sea Island Mathematical Manual gives a series of geometrical propositions in algebraic form and describes geometrical figures by algebraic equations. The first European who adopted those methods from the arabs, who, in turn, studied them from the Chinese, appears to have been Leonardo Fibonacci, who in his Practica Geometriae of 1220 used algebra in solving geometrical problems relating to the area of a triangle. Later Pierre Fermat and Rene Descartes developed the principles of analytic geometry. Another famous European, who seems to have been outrun by thesis, his eastern colleagues was Isaac Newton, who formulated his First Law of Motion in the eighteenth century. It stated that #8220;every body continues in its state of rest, or of uniform motion in a right line, unless it is owl creek compelled to change that state by forces impressed upon it.#8221; Joseph Needham#8217;s researches have now established that this law was stated in China in writing statements school the fourth or third century BC. We read in robert yates essays 1 the Mo Ching: #8220;The cessation of motion is writing thesis school due to the opposing force #8230; If there is persuasive on tattoos essay no opposing force #8230; the motion will never stop.
This is as true as that an thesis statements middle, ox is persuasive on tattoos essay not a horse.#8221; The book Mo Ching is the collection of writings of a school of writing thesis statements philosophers called Mohists, after their founder and essay outline sage Mo Ti (more oftrn known as Mo Tzu, which means #8220;Master Mo#8221;). The Mohists disappeared completely from Chinese history after only a moderate time, and most of their writings remained unread and almost forgotten until recently. Their brilliant scientific insights were also largely lost, and made very little lasting impact on statements later Chinese history. The Mohists were also the disorder paper, only ancient Chinese to consider the subject of dynamics in the theoretical sense, though practical dynamics was continuously applied in statements middle school the great strides made by Chinese technology and invention. Research Paper! Astronomy truly is an middle, ancient science in China. In fact, mankind#8217;s first record of an eclipse of the Sun was made in China in 2136 BC. The initial interest to that what was in the skies has been shown by robert essays of brutus 1, the Chinese to school, study phenomena, influencing their agrarian cycle.
The only way to predict the start of the buddhism compare and contrast, seasons was by the positions of the stars overhead. The equinoxes and solstices were the primary way to determine the writing thesis, seasons. The middle of panic research spring was when Niao was overhead, in the mid summer Huo is above, in the mid autumn Xu is in the sky, and in mid winter Mao is overhead. These star positions correspond to the equinoxes of the spring and autumn and also to the solstices of the summer and winter. Thesis Middle School! Even more interest has been shown by the Chinese to bridge essays, apply their knowledge for writing school, astrologic purposes. By 2300 BC, ancient Chinese astrologers, already had sophisticated observatory buildings, and as early as 2650 BC, Li Shu was writing about astronomy. Observing total solar eclipses was a major element of forecasting the future health and successes of the Emperor. Argument Of Definition Essay Outline! By about writing thesis statements 20 BC, surviving documents show that Chinese astrologers discovered what caused eclipses, and by 8 BC some predictions of essay smoking total solar eclipse were made using the 135-month recurrence period.
By AD 206 Chinese astrologers could predict solar eclipses by analyzing the thesis statements school, Moon#8217;s motion. Before 1000 BC the eclipse records are often incomplete, however, and the dating of the bones is argumentative essay not reliable. Eclipse observations from the writing thesis middle, Chou dynasty and Warring States period (c. 1050-221 BC), and onward, have been reliably dated, and essay outline it appears that some astronomers recognized eclipses as naturally occurring phenomena. From the Chou dynasty, 36 solar eclipse observations are recorded in the Ch#8217;un-ch#8217;iu beginning around 720 BC. The Piao and the Shih-chi documents refer to nine solar eclipses from the Warring States period. The Chinese were the writing thesis school, first to record Halley’s Comet. Owl Creek! Their recording mentions the writing thesis statements middle, #8220;broom star#8221; on the handle of owl creek bridge Yin. They also knew of thesis middle school many movements of the speech on tattoos essay, stars and were able to determine the difference between stars and planets. They also accounted for thesis statements school, guest stars being present in the sun which would be referred as sunspots now. They had thought stars were within the sun.
The path of the sun and the moon were recorded and studied. Argument Essay Outline! The sun and writing thesis statements middle the moon were on separate paths and are important for the complicated Chinese calendar. Chinese traditional medicine is very different from the European one, nevertheless it gained huge popularity on the West, and it’s most famous element is acupuncture which is very well-known to the people. No one was able to trace it#8217;s origin, it is still believed, that the first relevant observations were made by military doctors, who cured soldiers, wounded with arrows. It could also have some origins in massage. Acupuncture using needles and the systematized meridians is more traceable to the past 2000 years. The disease processes of the human body came to be seen as similar to external natural events – floods can ruin the crops, as drinking too much water with meals can impair digestion.
Drought can lead to fires, as a dry cough can turn into the fire of a bloody cough and fever. In China, indisputable and voluminous textual evidence exists to prove that the circulation of the blood was an established doctrine by the second century BC at owl creek bridge essays the latest. For the idea to have become elaborated by this time, however, into the full and complex doctrine that appears in thesis school The Yellow Emperor#8217;s Manual of buddhism compare and contrast essay Corporeal Medicine (China#8217;s equivalent of the Hippocratic writings of Greece), the original notion must have appeared a very long time previously. It is safe to say that the idea occurred in writing thesis statements middle China about two thousand years before it found acceptance in the West. The ancient Chinese conceived of two separate circulations of fluids in the body. Blood, pumped by the heart, flowed through the arteries, veins and capillaries. Buddhism And Hinduism Compare And Contrast! Ch#8217;i, an ethereal, rarefied form of energy, was pumped by the lungs to circulate through the body in invisible tracts. The concept of this dual circulation of fluids was central to the practice of acupuncture. The Chinese traditionally identified twenty-eight different types of school pulse, which they recognized as emanating from the pumping heart. The entire view of the body and its functioning was that of a dual circulation theory of blood (which was yin) and ch#8217;i (which was yang).
The two were interrelated. As a text dating from about the owl creek bridge, time of Christ says: #8216;The flow of the blood is maintained by the ch#8217;i, and the motion of the ch#8217;i depends on the blood; thus coursing in mutual reliance they move around.#8217; The Yellow Emperor#8217;s Manual says: #8216;The function of the tract-channel system of the human body is to promote a normal passage of the blood and the ch#8217;i, so that the writing thesis middle school, vital essentials derived from man#8217;s food can nourish the yin and yang viscera, sustain the muscles, sinews and argument of definition essay outline bones, and lubricate the joints.#8217; Ancient China was truly a birth-place of many inventions and doctrines, which are applied in the entire modern world, including achievements in agriculture, engineering, mathematics, astronomy and medicine. The Chinese talked of the thesis middle, same thing as their European colleagues, and argument of definition often much earlier than the Europeans did, however, they did it in the traditional way of writing middle their civilization, so many of their achievements were not understood or forgotten, to be later attributed to Europeans. Nevertheless, it is impossible to reject the influence, which the civilization of ancient China has on buddhism and contrast modern world, since some of it’s founding technologies and scientific methods origin exactly from China. Cellular and molecular pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus: lessons from writing statements middle school animal models. © BioMed Central Ltd 2011. Published: 30 September 2011. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex disease characterized by the appearance of and hinduism and contrast essay autoantibodies against nuclear antigens and the involvement of multiple organ systems, including the kidneys. The precise immunological events that trigger the middle onset of clinical manifestations of SLE are not yet well understood. However, research using various mouse strains of argument of definition spontaneous and inducible lupus in the last two decades has provided insights into the role of the immune system in the pathogenesis of this disease. According to our present understanding, the immunological defects resulting in the development of SLE can be categorized into two phases: (a) systemic autoimmunity resulting in increased serum antinuclear and antiglomerular autoantibodies and (b) immunological events that occur within the target organ and result in statements end organ damage. Aberrations in the innate as well as adaptive arms of the immune system both play an important role in the genesis and progression of lupus. Robert? Here, we will review the present understanding - as garnered from studying mouse models - about the writing thesis middle roles of various immune cells in lupus pathogenesis. Pathogenic mechanisms of and hinduism systemic lupus . Writing Middle School? Different subpopulations of immune cells interplay to directly or indirectly regulate other subpopulations by releasing different cytokines and other mediators of inflammation, thereby contributing to the progression of the systemic disease. Yates Of Brutus Number? The hyperactivated leukocytes as well as the pathogenic autoantibodies and immune complexes resulting from the systemic disease ultimately play an important role in local autoimmunity and end organ disease within target organs like the kidneys.
Ab, antibody; BAFF, B-cell activation factor; DC, dendritic cell; IC, immune complex; IFN-I, interferon-I; IL-10, interleukin-10; M?, macrophage; MHC, major histocompatibility complex; self-Ag, self-antigen; TCR, T-cell receptor; TGF-?, transforming growth factor-beta. Systemic autoimmunity in systemic lupus erythematosus: handling of self-antigens. The presence of high titers of thesis middle school autoantibodies against nuclear antigens is the hallmark of SLE. Whereas there is on tattoos essay little evidence to indicate whether self-antigens in SLE are aberrant in writing statements middle school sequence or structure, there is evidence that the robert yates aberrant handling of thesis school self-antigens could facilitate lupus pathogenesis. Essays? Although apoptotic bodies are normally rapidly cleared with the help of the complement and other systems, defects in this clearance system could lead to the accumulation of apoptotic bodies and their prevalence in serum [ 1 ]. There have been limited reports that NZB/W F1 and MRL/lpr mice, which spontaneously develop a lupus-like disease, have high serum levels of nucleosomes [ 2 , 3 ]. Writing School? Non-autoimmune C3H, BALB/c, and C57BL/6 mouse strains, when injected with apoptotic bodies, developed serum autoantibodies similar to those seen in SLE [ 4 ]. Essays Number? Although these studies warrant independent confirmation, they support the notion that apoptotic cells could harbor the immunogens responsible for antinuclear antibody formation. Moreover, mice with defects in genes that play an important role in the clearance of writing school apoptotic bodies, like DNase I, serum amyloid protein P (SAP), sIgM, or tyrosine kinase c-mer, all develop SLE-like disease with elevated levels of antinuclear antibodies [ 5 – 8 ]. These data support the hypothesis that the inefficient clearance of argumentative essay smoking apoptotic bodies could be one factor leading to the development of SLE. The important role of the complement system and FcR in the process of clearing apoptotic materials has also been recently documented. Thus, C1q-deficient mice exhibit impaired internalization of thesis middle apoptotic cells by peritoneal macrophages and develop proliferative glomerulonephritis characterized by high levels of apoptotic cell bodies [ 9 ]. Cells of the adaptive immune system as mediators of systemic autoimmunity in systemic lupus erythematosus. B lymphocytes in systemic lupus erythematosus. Autoantibodies are major contributors to of definition essay, end organ damage as illustrated by the glomerulonephritis associated with antinuclear and anti-glomerular antibodies, congenital heart block associated with anti-Ro antibody, and thrombosis associated with anti-cardiolipin antibodies [ 10 ]. However, B cells can contribute to SLE pathogenesis through additional pathways.
For example, lupus-prone MRL/lpr mice that are made B cell-deficient exhibit a markedly attenuated disease. These mice have an absence of autoantibodies, as expected, but also display a dramatic lack in T-cell activation. This study, by Shlomchik and writing middle colleagues [ 11 ], implied an essential role for B cells, but not necessarily autoantibodies, in argumentative smoking should be banned the pathogenesis of lupus [ 11 ]. Statements? In another study, Shlomchik and colleagues [ 12 ] used MRL/lpr mice expressing a mutant immunoglobulin (Ig) that cannot be secreted, thus essentially prohibiting autoantibody generation, and showed that those mice still developed nephritis and persuasive vasculitis with associated T-cell activation. That study convincingly showed that B cells may contribute to the development of lupus in ways that are independent of autoantibodies. Middle School? The additional role of B cells as antigen-presenting cells that mediate T-cell activation in lupus comes from panic disorder MRL/lpr mice studies showing that B-cell deficiency leads to thesis middle, reduced CD4 + and CD8 + T-cell activation [ 13 ].
Besides secreting proinflammatory cytokines like interleukin-6 (IL-6) and persuasive speech on tattoos interferon-gamma (IFN-?), B cells may secrete IL-10, which has an anti-inflammatory function. Therefore, B cells that secrete IL-10 (or B10 cells) have been called regulatory B cells and writing thesis middle were first reported in B10.PL mice in which IL-10-producing B cells were found to speech on tattoos essay, regulate the middle severity of experimental auto-immune encephalitis [ 14 ]. In murine lupus, IL-10 deficiency was found to panic disorder, contribute to writing, more severe disease with an argumentative essay smoking should increase in Th1 cytokine levels [ 15 ]. A recent study using CD19 -/- NZB/W mice reported that B10 cells could induce expansion of regulatory T cells, a subset of T cells with immunosuppressive function [ 16 ]. Thesis Statements? However, data from human lupus reveal a different facet of IL-10. In the case of human SLE, studies suggest that IL-10 promotes rather than inhibits lupus [ 17 ]. A better understanding of the argumentative essay smoking should be banned role of thesis middle IL-10-producing B cells and the mechanism of action of IL-10 is required to explain the differences between the murine and human data. Mouse models have helped delineate the molecular mechanisms through which self- reactive B cells might arise. Sle1 is a lupus susceptibility locus derived from the NZM2410 mouse strain. Using Sle1 congenic C57Bl6 mice, Kumar and colleagues [ 18 ] reported that the auto-immune-associated variant of the Ly108 gene, a member of the SLAM family of immune cell receptors which lies within the Sle1 locus, leads to loss of B-cell tolerance because of impaired negative selection of research paper autoreactive B cells at the immature B-cell stage. On the other hand, increased B-cell signaling, especially in the case of mature peripheral B cells, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of humoral autoimmunity.
Mice that are deficient in various inhibitory molecules that dampen B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling, such as SHP-1 [ 19 ], Lyn [ 20 ], or Fc?RIIb [ 21 ], develop systemic autoimmunity. Mice over-expressing molecules that strengthen BCR signaling, such as CD19, also develop autoimmunity [ 22 ]. Recent studies have implicated a class of thesis middle immune system receptors called Toll-like receptors (TLRs) in the synergistic activation of B cells by BCR and TLR signaling. Disorder Paper? Simultaneous engagement of BCRs that are specific for DNA by nuclear antigens that are abundant in apoptotic material and TLR9 on B cells causes activation of both BCR and TLR signaling pathways [ 23 ]. In the NZB/W and MRL/lpr mouse models of writing thesis statements lupus, activation of TLR9 with a synthetic DNA ligand causes accelerated nephritis with increased anti-DNA antibody levels [ 24 ]. On the other hand, TLR9-deficient autoimmune mouse models exhibit lower levels of anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) and anti-chromatin antibody [ 25 ]. Argument? Similarly, B cells possessing BCRs specific for RNA could be synergistically activated by thesis middle BCR and TLR7 signaling [ 26 ]. These findings were supported by research in the BXSB mouse model of lupus. Duplication of the TLR7 gene in the Yaa lupus susceptibility locus leads to increased gene dosage effects that contribute to the lupus-like phenotype seen in on tattoos essay this model [ 27 ]. Defects that may lead to increased survival of autoreactive B cells have also been found to school, contribute to the development of autoimmunity.
B-cell activation factor (BAFF) is a major B-cell survival factor that functions particularly at the transitional B-cell stage. Should? BAFF transgenic mice develop a lupus-like disease with expansion of the peripheral B-cell pool and statements heightened production of autoantibodies [ 28 ]. Increased BAFF levels are thought to infringe the yates number 1 negative selection checkpoint at the T1 transitional stage, thereby allowing the survival and statements middle maturation of autoreactive B cells in the periphery and their participation in the germinal center reaction. These findings are supported by the observations that lupus-prone mice exhibit elevated serum BAFF levels and that administration of buddhism and contrast essay TACI-Ig, which acts as a soluble receptor for thesis statements middle BAFF, is effective in treating murine lupus [ 29 ]. T lymphocytes in systemic lupus erythematosus. The obligatory role of buddhism compare T cells in lupus pathogenesis has been demonstrated by using several genetically engineered mouse models [ 30 ]. Writing Thesis? Lupus T cells are likely to contribute to disease through contact-dependent mechanisms (mediated by CD40L:CD40, OX40L:OX40, and so on) as well as released cytokines [ 30 ]. One important cytokine secreted by the Th1 cells is IFN-?, which plays a pivotal role in the production of pathogenic isotypes of antinuclear autoantibodies in murine lupus models. Expression of IFN-? in the skin of transgenic mice leads to buddhism and hinduism compare and contrast essay, the production of thesis statements anti-DNA and anti-Sm auto-antibodies [ 31 ]. A deficiency of IFN-? in argumentative essay should MRL/lpr and NZB/W lupus-prone mice leads to statements school, reduced anti-DNA antibody levels [ 32 , 33 ]. In support of essays these findings, blocking the IFN-? receptor with monoclonal antibodies or soluble IFN-? receptor reduces disease activity in lupus-prone mice [ 34 , 35 ]. CD4 + T h17 cells are a recently described CD4 + T-cell subset that appears to mediate pathogenesis in some lupus mouse models [ 36 ]. However, it has become clear that the contribution of thesis Th17 cells to autoimmunity is far more complex, depending on the disease and mouse model [ 37 ]. Of Definition Essay Outline? Studies in patients with SLE or related diseases have demonstrated that Th17 cells may have a role in disease development in some, but not all, patients [ 38 ]. Given the heterogeneity of the disease, it may be possible that Th17 cells play a role in lupus pathogenesis in a genetically defined subset of subjects or in particular end organ manifestations and that anti-IL -17 therapy may be helpful specifically in those patients. In addition, the regulatory T cell subset appears to modulate the writing thesis middle school breakdown of T-cell tolerance in lupus [ 39 ]. Clearly, we need to argument of definition essay outline, gain a better understanding of how pathogenic T cells (Th17 cells) and thesis statements school regulatory T cells, perhaps in yinyang fashion, dictate disease activity in lupus. Innate immune cells as mediators of systemic autoimmunity in systemic lupus erythematosus. The important role of the innate immune system in smoking SLE pathogenesis has only recently been appreciated.
Described below are the possible roles played by writing statements school three key cell types in the innate immune system. Monocytes/macrophages from patients with lupus have been found to smoking be banned, have a reduced capacity to phagocytose apoptotic materials [ 40 ], and thesis school their numbers were reduced in the inflammatory exudates from patients with SLE [ 41 ]. It was postulated, on owl creek essays, the basis of those studies, that the statements defective phagocytosis of monocytes/macrophages contributed to inefficient clearing of apoptotic materials, leading to autoimmunity [ 42 ], a notion that is supported by mice lacking the myeloid cell receptors, Tyro3, Axl, and owl creek bridge Mer receptor tyrosine kinases [ 43 , 44 ]. Whereas c-mer knockout mice exhibited increased anti-dsDNA autoantibody levels without any significant renal pathology [ 43 ], Tyro3/Axl/Mer triple-knockout mice exhibited high levels of thesis middle autoantibodies along with multiple end organ involvement [ 44 ]. Monocytes/macrophages can contribute to persuasive on tattoos, disease in another important way: through the thesis statements middle school elaboration of proinflammatory cytokines and argument of definition outline chemokines. Statements School? This is illustrated by macrophages from B6. Robert Of Brutus? Sle3 congenic mice, in which Sle3 is thesis school a lupus susceptibility locus derived from the of definition NZM2410 lupus-prone strain [ 45 ]. These murine studies showed that monocytes/macrophages in lupus probably have defects beyond abnormal phagocytosis and that these cells may take part in aberrant regulation of the immune system. A study by Kilmon and colleagues [ 46 ] demonstrated that macrophages regulate B-cell tolerance by writing middle secreting regulatory factors like IL-6 and CD40L and that macrophages from lupus-prone MRL/lpr mice are less capable of repressing Ig secretion coincident with reduced secretion of these repressive factors.
Collectively, these findings implicate a more significant role for monocytes/macrophages in the pathogenesis of lupus, but further studies in patients with SLE are necessary to substantiate these findings. Polymorphonuclear cells in systemic lupus erythematosus. A neutrophil-specific gene expression signature was reported to correlate positively with SLE disease activity in patients with SLE [ 47 ], suggesting that these cells may play an important role in SLE pathogenesis. Disorder Paper? The exact mechanism by which this occurs is not yet clear. However, a recent study demonstrated that neutrophil extracellular traps, which are networks of DNA, histones, and writing thesis neutrophil proteins that function primarily to trap microorganisms, may be involved in argumentative SLE pathogenesis, possibly by generating autoantigens and serving as adjuvants [ 48 ]. The role of neutrophils in murine lupus, unlike that in writing thesis middle school human lupus, is poorly studied.
Dendritic cells in systemic lupus erythematosus. Studies in buddhism mouse models have been pivotal in determining the role that dendritic cells (DCs) play in thesis statements middle school the pathogenesis of persuasive speech on tattoos essay lupus. One of the earliest findings implicating the putative role of DCs in the breakdown of tolerance was that transferring DCs from normal donor mice to normal recipient mice could cause loss of tolerance in thesis statements the host, leading to the appearance of anti-DNA and anticardiolipin autoantibodies [ 49 ]. A study by Chen and colleagues [ 50 ] showed that mice with defective DC apoptosis accumulated large numbers of on tattoos essay DCs and middle school exhibited chronic lymphocyte activation and systemic autoimmunity. Other studies using murine models have helped in identifying the genetic loci responsible for imparting the abnormal phenotypes seen in DCs from lupus-prone mice. Buddhism And Contrast? One such locus is Sle3 , which is a lupus susceptibility locus derived from the NZM2410 strain of lupus-prone mice. C57BL/6 (B6) mice congenic for writing thesis statements middle school Sle3 develop moderate glomerulonephritis along with modest levels of essays antinuclear antibodies [ 51 ]. Moreover, the DCs from B6.
Sle3 congenics are less susceptible to apoptosis, have a more mature phenotype, and are more proinflammatory. They are also more efficient in stimulating T cells in vitro and eliciting autoantibodies in vivo compared with DCs from normal B6 mice [ 45 ]. These studies provided insights into genetic factors and writing statements school immune mechanisms related to on tattoos essay, abnormal DC activation in writing middle school murine lupus. Studies have also shown that DCs play an important role in SLE pathogenesis by secreting potent proinflammatory cytokines, such as type I IFNs (IFN-?) [ 52 ]. Immune complexes (ICs) purified from sera of patients with SLE were found to stimulate plasmacytoid DCs (pDCs) to produce IFN-? [ 53 ]. Later studies revealed a possible role of TLRs as potent inducers of IFN-? production by activated pDCs in smoking should lupus. IFN-? secreted by activated pDCs was found to directly influence B cells to produce antibodies of the IgG subclass against soluble autoantigens in thesis middle mice [ 54 ]. This cytokine also upregulated BAFF expression by monocytes and of definition outline mature DCs, which promotes both the survival of autoreactive B cells and writing middle school their differentiation into plasmablasts [ 55 ]. Persuasive On Tattoos? Together, these reciprocal events lead to a pathogenic cycle, in which both the innate and adaptive immune systems cooperate and feedback upon writing each other, eventually leading to robert of brutus number 1, high titers of autoantibodies. Local autoimmunity in systemic lupus erythematosus. SLE is an autoimmune disease that affects multiple organ systems, including the kidney, skin, heart, lung, and hematopoietic and nervous systems. As reviewed below and illustrated in Figure 1 , the writing middle players mediating local autoimmunity and renal disease in lupus can be classified broadly as (a) ICs and infiltrating cells of hematological origin and argumentative should be banned (b) resident cells of the thesis school kidneys. Role of immune complexes and infiltrating cells of hematological origin in lupus nephritis. Anti-DNA and DNA ICs were the first ICs isolated from kidney elutes of patients with SLE and mouse models [ 56 ]. Intraperitoneal injection of human and owl creek essays murine anti-DNA antibodies was found to trigger lupuslike kidney disease [ 57 ], establishing a direct role of these antibodies in the pathogenesis of writing statements middle lupus nephritis. Similarly, transgenic overexpression of Ig anti-DNA antibodies in mouse models can lead to renal pathology similar to that seen in human lupus nephritis, highlighting a causal role for compare and contrast autoantibodies in the development of lupus nephritis [ 58 ]. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain how anti-DNA antibodies may lead to renal disease in lupus [ 59 ]. Anti-DNA antibodies can form ICs with DNA/nucleosomes released from school apoptotic cells.
Eventually, ICs become deposited in the kidney, leading to the initiation of a local inflammatory response through Fc?R-or complement-mediated mechanisms or both. Alternately, anti-DNA antibodies may bind to owl creek bridge, DNA/nucleosomes that have been trapped or 'planted' in writing thesis the kidney glomerulus. Paper? A third mechanism suggests possible cross-reactivity between anti-DNA antibodies and local renal antigens like laminin, alpha-actinin, and heparan sulfate [ 60 ]. Other studies have shown that anti-DNA antibodies are not an absolute requirement for development of SLE. NZM2328.Lc4 mice exhibit lupus-like disease with glomerular IC deposits and eventually develop fatal lupus nephritis.
These mice exhibit no anti-DNA antibody in their serum or in kidney eluates, demonstrating that anti-DNA antibodies are not essential for the development of lupus nephritis [ 61 ]. Antibodies obtained from the kidney elutes of these mice reacted with various renal antigens, but none was specific for dsDNA [ 62 ]. Another study eluted Igs from renal tissues obtained from patients with lupus at autopsy and screened the writing thesis statements Igs against a panel of robert essays of brutus 14 different antigens, which included dsDNA, chromatin, Sm, SSA, SSB, and histones [ 63 ]. These authors found that only writing middle 0.3% to panic research paper, 41.3% of total kidney-eluted IgG reacted with these antigens. Therefore, a vast majority of renal antibodies bind to yet-unknown antigens. Statements School? In support of this idea, a study using a glomerular proteome array showed that serum from lupus mice and patients reacts with multiple nuclear and matrix-derived autoantigens [ 64 ]. Role of speech lymphoid cells in lupus nephritis. Lymphoid aggregates with T cells and B cells have been observed within the kidneys afflicted by lupus nephritis, although their intrarenal roles remain to be fully appreciated. T cells also play a major role in pathogenesis of school SLE. Using MRL/lpr mice, Chan and colleagues [ 12 ] showed that mice lacking secreted Ig, but having B cells with a transgenic BCR, still exhibit renal disease. In another study, Schiffer and colleagues [ 65 ] treated NZB/W F1 mice that had established nephritis with CTLA4Ig; this led to essays, disease remission with a significant delay in thesis school mortality. Using a transgenic mouse model system, Heymann and panic colleagues [ 66 ] demonstrated that both cytotoxic T (Tc) cells and Th cells have direct roles in thesis statements middle school glomerulonephritis. The authors used transgenic mice expressing the model antigens ovalbumin and argumentative essay be banned hen egg lysozyme in glomerular epithelial cells called podocytes.
Co-injection of ovalbumin-specific transgenic CD8 + Tc and CD4 + Th cells into writing statements these mice resulted in periglomerular mononuclear infiltrates and inflammation of parietal epithelial cells, similar to lesions frequently observed in human chronic glomerulonephritis. The ovalbumin-specific CD8 + Tc cells were found to be activated and expanded in speech on tattoos the renal lymph nodes, and the activation of T cells in turn could be prevented by depletion of DCs. Crosstalk between tubulointerstitial DCs and thesis statements Th cells resulted in persuasive essay intrarenal cytokine and chemokine production and in recruitment of writing school more Tc cells, monocyte-derived DCs, and macrophages. That study was the persuasive first direct evidence that glomerular antigen-specific Tc and Th cells can induce glomerulonephritis in a process regulated by writing thesis school DCs. Essay Smoking Should? Although similar studies in the context of lupus nephritis are eagerly awaited, the above studies suggest that type IV hypersensitivity-driven mechanisms are likely to be important in mediating autoimmune nephritis. Kidneys of nephritic NZM2328 mice show high levels of expression of Th1-type cytokines like IFN-? and IL-12 [ 67 ]. Administration of IFN-?, a Th1 cytokine, to NZB/W F1 mice exacerbates disease, whereas the deficiency of IFN-? in MRL/lpr mice ameliorates nephritis [ 32 , 34 ]. Writing Statements Middle? Similarly, inhibition of IL-18, a cytokine that induces IFN-? and other Th1 cytokines, was found to cause a significant reduction in buddhism and contrast essay lymphoproliferation and IFN-? production and thesis statements school resulted in panic disorder paper a decrease in writing middle school lupus nephritis [ 68 ]. These studies reinforce the concept that type IV hypersensitivity reactions may also contribute to lupus nephritis. Other studies have shown a possible role for buddhism and hinduism compare essay IL-4, a Th2-type cytokine, in writing glomerulosclerosis in which transgenic overexpression of IL-4 was found to yates of brutus number 1, facilitate glomerulosclerosis [ 69 ]. In various studies, IL-4 was found to have a direct effect on fibroblast proliferation, collagen gene expression, and collagen synthesis [ 70 ]. Moreover, inhibition of IL-4 signaling in various lupus-prone mouse models was found to protect mice from developing advanced nephritis in the presence of anti-DNA antibody and infiltrating inflammatory cells [ 32 ]. Therefore, IL-4 appears to statements middle, play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of glomerulosclerosis and chronic renal fibrosis in lupus by acting directly upon resident renal cells. Role of myeloid cells in lupus nephritis. Infiltration of DCs in argumentative should the glomeruli and tubulointerstitial spaces of the kidneys has been reported in various murine models of nephritis, including NZB/W F1 [ 67 ], anti-glomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) [ 71 ], and mice engineered to express a foreign antigen on podocytes [ 66 ]. DCs may promote lupus nephritis by several mechanisms.
One mechanism may be through migration of statements middle DCs to local lymph nodes and presentation of renal antigens to owl creek essays, autoreactive lymphocytes in the local lymph nodes, thereby initiating an statements middle autoimmune response against renal autoantigens [ 72 ]. DCs may also secrete a variety of different proinflammatory and profibrotic cytokines like IL-6, IL-1, IL-18, IFN-?, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-?), and essay transforming growth factor-beta to promote renal inflammation and fibrosis [ 73 ]. Despite these possibilities, we do not currently understand the degree to which intrarenal DCs are important for writing lupus pathogenesis or the exact mechanisms through which they operate. Similar to DCs, macrophages are recruited to the nephritic kidneys of argumentative smoking patients with SLE and lupus-prone mice [ 74 , 75 ] and influence the school progression of lupus nephritis. In a study using poly(I:C)-induced lupus nephritis in NZB/W mice, proliferative glomerulonephritis was found to be associated with renalinfiltrating macrophages and renal expression of IFN-inducible genes, matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and disorder research paper growth factors [ 76 ]. Writing Statements Middle School? Glomerular crescent formation and renal MMP and growth factor expression were dependent on renal macrophages that expressed IL-10, MMPs, osteopontin, and various growth factors, including platelet-derived growth factor-C (PDGF-C) and heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) [ 76 ]. These findings accord a potentially important role for macrophages as mediators of aggressive nephritis in lupus by driving the on tattoos essay expression of various cytokines and school growth factors in the kidney. Although macrophage depletion or transfer studies have not been reported in spontaneous lupus nephritis, this role has been examined further in a related murine nephritis model that shares pathogenic pathways with spontaneous lupus nephritis [ 77 ]: anti-GBM-induced nephritis. In the latter model, depletion and adoptive transfer studies have demonstrated a critical role for macrophages in the pathogenesis of nephritis [ 78 , 79 ]. By implanting renal tubular epithelial cells genetically modified to robert essays 1, produce colony-stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) under the writing statements middle renal capsule of MRL/lpr mice, Kelley and essay outline colleagues [ 80 ] showed that CSF-1 and TNF-? released by tubular epithelial cells were responsible for promoting renal pathology by fostering macrophage accumulation. In a study using NZB/W lupus-prone mice, Schiffer and colleagues [ 75 ] identified an activated type II macrophage population as a key marker for proteinuria onset and disease remission and suggested that therapy for writing thesis statements school lupus nephritis include strategies that prevent both activation of smoking monocytes and writing thesis their migration to the kidney.
Neutrophils, another myeloid cell subtype, have also been shown to infiltrate nephritic kidneys and contribute to buddhism compare essay, the pathogenesis of experimental nephritis [ 81 ], although their role in lupus nephritis is writing thesis statements school less well defined. Neutrophils release various proinflammatory cytokines [ 82 ] as well as proteases and reactive oxygen species that lead to persuasive speech essay, acute inflammation and renal tissue injury [ 83 ]. Further studies in murine models are clearly warranted. Role of thesis statements school resident renal cells in lupus nephritis. It is clear that many intrinsic renal cells, including podocytes and tubular epithelial cells, have the capacity to costimulate intrarenal T cells via ICAM-I, MHC-II, B-7, and/or CD40-mediated mechanisms [ 84 – 86 ] or by argument of definition essay releasing pathogenic cytokines [ 87 ]. However, the extent to which these intrarenal costimulatory mechanisms and thesis school cytokines are operative in spontaneous lupus nephritis remains unknown. On the other hand, the notion that intrinsic renal cells could be essential in mediating antibody-mediated nephritis is supported by bone marrow transfer or kidney transplant studies in mice challenged with anti-GBM sera [ 88 – 90 ]. These studies have defined the roles of MHC-II, INF-?, and Fn14 expression on intrinsic renal cells in mediating nephritis. Essays? Overall, we have a very limited understanding of the writing thesis school role that intrinsic renal cells play in spontaneous lupus nephritis.
As discussed in this review, mouse models have proven to be indispensable for argument essay outline understanding the statements middle school immunological and molecular basis of systemic autoimmunity in lupus. However, it is argumentative essay becoming increasingly clear that local autoimmunity in target organs and the responses that target organs play are equally important in disease pathogenesis. Writing? Murine models are also proving to be instrumental in buddhism and hinduism compare essay helping us unravel the intricate mechanisms that underlie the end organ responses in thesis middle school lupus, although the specific roles of various cell types warrant systematic investigation. Mouse models have also enhanced our understanding of the of brutus 1 respective roles of various cells and thesis molecules in the innate immune system and the interplay between the innate and robert essays of brutus adaptive immune systems in writing school lupus pathogenesis. The challenge ahead is to robert essays of brutus, better define the cellular and molecular players orchestrating lupus and to translate our improved understanding of lupus pathogenesis into better rationalized therapeutics targeting selected cells or molecules (or both) that facilitate lupus.
